re: Why is the country/this board so polarized?

It first started in the 90s when the Democratic party started slowly moving more and more to the Left. Then W had a bad 8 years in office and Democrats viciously attacked and saw an opportunity to take their party WAY WAY WAY farther left. This Democratic Party has taken this country so far left of center that even a moderate Democrat like Bill Clinton would be shouted down as a bigoted racist, intolerant, women hating, white privileged scumbag by the left in this country. Liberals have poisoned the political well to such a sad degree that they literally forced conservatives to defend themselves and draw a line in the sand and say enough is enough
I would agree with this. I would also add that Obama is a master of making polarizing statements. As opposed to trying to work with the other side.
What's amazing is that the liberal of the early 90's looks nothing like the liberal of today.

The problem is that Americans expect the American dream of the 50's through the 80's. Those were unprecedented times in this country and the world economically. Those days are over. That kind of consumerist growth year over year can't be maintained. Especially since we exported it to a large part of the industrialized world. A new grassroots economy is developing. And I think it maintains the creative impulse that has always made this country so innovative. I hope the obsession with material things and keeping up with the Joneses is dying off. That 20th century mentality contributes to much of American's anxiety and dissatisfaction.
Nice to wake up to this one! Thought the transition will be problematic.

Yes, it's all the left.

Wow. Memories are short here.
When Obama started his first term, he tried to. That' was a major campaign theme for him, but the GOP did everything they could to shut him down. Their stated goal was to ensure Obama was a 1 term president. Their only play was to be intransegent. Remember health care? And how Obamacare is modeled on Romney care? And how it was an idea from The Heritage Foundation? Republicans to this day are screaming bloody murder over it.
It's certainly not 1 side's fault, but to suggest that Obama came into office determined NOT to work with the other side is ridiculous.

Americans need to stop worshipping at the altar of celebrities, athletes and the mega rich

start respecting any human being who gets up each day and contributes to society in a positive way instead of looking down on people doing blue collar work.

The media, the parties, the fact that this country is made up of very different ideologies (individual vs collective) that should probably be separate countries or at least autonomously functioning regions.

because of interacting with many fine Black folk and having sports heroes who are Black - had pretty much ditched the racial stereotypes that are hurtful and societally pernicious. BUT...given the blatant on obvious highly publicized chip-on-the-shoulder ("the police acted stupidly", "if I had a son..." and Holder's racial Law policy) presidency of Obama with his race politics too.
e.g. They were good with sports hero's and "fine black folk" but Obama went WAY over the uppity line.

Absolutely correct. This is the reason why the GOP hasn't been able to come up with a legitimate alternative to the ACA. The ACA already incorporates a lot, if not most, of their ideas. And this includes the mandate. Anything they come up with will look similar to the ACA. Left wingers want a single payer system. The right was thrown a bone with the ACA, and instead embracing it, they chose to play politics and shite the bed.

The internet and zillions of cable/radio channels were supposed to assist in the exchange of information and spur debate. They have done that in small places like this board, but for the most part, people just go to the source they like to hear. It has led to all of these echo chambers people retreat to in order to vent.

What changes to Obamacare did he accept from this? How many amendments were voted on and how many approved?

This.
I would phrase it as immediate access to information by people who lack the cognitive ability to process it. Rational thought and dialogue is replaced by emotional sound bytes.

I haven't read the thread so going back to your title 'country/board'
Re: poli board...keep in mind that 99.9% of Americans NEVER post on a Poli Board. All Poli Boards are polarized because they are inhabited by people who pay a LOT of attention to political issues. They have firm opinions about most topics and they are much more knowledgeable about those topics than the folks sitting next to you at the DMV.
Poli boards are also dominated by the right wing. It's because the right is more into logic while the left is more into emotion. Logic has the advantage in debate.
The Poli boards dominated by the left require heavy censorship by moderators...like Dem Underground. 90% of the posts I make on this board would be deleted by DU moderators. That's why I left after only 1 month.
Hell, Rex has been deleted by DU for not reciting the left wing line correctly.
