I don't think he was dumb though, he was just very moody and liked to keep to himself. His first language wasn't English, so you may be getting that he was dumb from the poor way he used the English language.
I mean he wasn't real athletically gifted, he wasn't as skilled off his broom.
Everyone had people helping them out on the thinking parts. Remember Fake Moody helped Harry and Cedric. Maxime was also helping out Fleur.

I don't think you can say he wasn't athletically gifted. He was the best player in the world at the most important position in the biggest sport, and he was 17 yrs old
