Ahh thanks.
It was Maria I of Portugal who fricked me up.
my spy kept telling me she was gonna turn on me, despite being nice as frick and allied. Even forewarned it would be a naval assault.
I should always listen to my spies?

Oddly enough, I don't use merchant of Venice too often. You lose the CS votes.
This one is interesting but makes sense. I used MoV as soon as I got one and instantly regretted it when venice and my puppet CS didnt have access to iron. So I guess I learned to wait till the iron is revealed and choose wisely.

like to use religion with them
I feel overwhelmed with religion. I get flustered when I have to pick traits of my religion. I try to use traits that give me lots of either gold or science.
Patronage and Commerce. Making notes for later. Thanks for all the tips

Religion is tricky for Venice for me.
If I'm near known warring civs, I'll go for defensive bonuses and such.
It isn't bad to use the "+__ for followers in other civs" perks though. Especially if you found a religion early and can spread it quick.

Religion is what you make of it, I generally make my religion one that spreads fast and provides food bonuses. Get it to nearby CS and you can create a little network to work through the ages.

On another note, what has two thumbs and is excited for the new Civ game in space?? This guy!

Yup. It can be kind of tough to found one early without knowing exactly what your strategy will be.

IDK Why they had to nerf my France into the ground but Babylon is my civ of choice these days.
Posted on 7/8/14 at 5:42 pm to LSUSaintsHornets
To be fair, France was too powerful. I could have 4-5 policy trees fully unlocked regularly every game. Plus border expansion was insane. They took it too far though.
I'm a big fan of japan but Greece is my go to. America is fun as well if you like to war. B17s and musket men are solid and manifest destiny is great for expanding cheaply AND pissing off the AI.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm bored with my current games and looking for something new to play. Having never played any Civ game ever, how steep is the learning curve? I was thinking about giving it a go.

Civ 5 is pretty easy to start playing, so you shouldn't have much trouble learning to play as you go. Just start a game with the intent of learning the game mechanics and you'll be fine.
Posted on 7/8/14 at 8:25 pm to ILikeLSUToo
It's easy to learn but tough to master. Can be overwhelming at times as you learn how deep it. Easy to play though fundamentally, it's just buildings and clicking units across terrain and giving those units orders
I just lost my last game. Randomly rolled, got Venice. Tried to build up a trading and naval empire and ignored creating an army. Ally declared war on me and sacked my city before BC ended But hey at least my people were happy... fml

You shouldn't have a problem.
If you get confused/lost just ask here or check the civfanatics forums. Tons of great info out there.

My first Civ game was Civ Revolution on the PS3, it was totally stripped down for a better console experience, and I loved it. It was that game that made me love Civ 4 and 5.
Also, for the OP, I've found that playing as Hiawatha has granted massive bonuses for my play style. I expand fast and get a great deal of cheap warriors early, ie I essentially zerg rush with him.

Forest & Jungle can be used as if they were roads...

Seems like you already learned a lot.
Let me add a bit: why do you go to war? You aren't going to win a domination victory by fighting an endless eternal war that you start in medieval times.
Go to war to grow your power. Then consolidate. Use the extra resources you got to get stronger. Start another war to get even stronger. Consolidate. Rinse and repeat.
At some point you will have enough might you can think about rolling into an endless war, but you should be pretty far down the tech tree by then.
Also basics, play on easy difficulty and move up.

Been playing on hard for the challenge.
I go to war cause its fun. I do get your point about the endless war though. While me and Zulu tribe go back and forth fighting over this port city...France grows stronger. Not sure what to do about them.

If you aren't too hated by everyone else for warmongering, get a coalition to fight. Pay them off if you have to. Make them fight wars on all fronts.
Posted on 7/9/14 at 11:40 am to Srbtiger06
Problem with that is I'm in a coalition with the French vs the Zulu.
I've got 5 cities and positive happiness. Around turn 150 or 200. May just try for a cultural victory with Egypt. I can start pumping out wonders quickly
Those Zulu impis fricking hurt
