Usefulness of NFL mock drafts

Finally got an offer to a fantasy league I've been wanting into for the past 3 years as someone just got kicked out. It's a 12-team standard scoring league. Just did a mock draft last night for shits and gigs to see who I could get. This may have been like the 2nd or 3rd time i've ever done this. How useful are these? Just to see when players are going on average? I realize this may be a dumb question.
FWIW, here's what I ended up with...

they're very good at figuring out where people plan to take certain players.

If you need mock drafts, you don't know what you're doing. IMO.

They can be useful just to test your draft rankings. I use them to test my draft strategy. So, for instance, if I've decided this is a good year for RB, RB, QB, WR, then I'll test it and when I get crap for a #1 WR, then I'll adjust my strategy.
I read the thread and saw chest-thumping about who is a better fantasy owner, blah, blah, blah. IMO, practice cannot hurt. I may help or do nothing, but it will not hurt, and there is no shame in participating in a mock draft whether you've won multiple championships or not.

Mocks aren't without some value. Trying out different strategies can allow you to get a high level view of what your team might look like with that strategy.
The problem with mock drafts, for me at least, is that all it takes is one jack arse taking his favorite player to ruin the value for you. IMO, you're better off putting the players in tiers based on natural breaks in projected stats (you can compile these from multiple sources as a baseline and modify them as you see fit). Then working with ADP for the site you're drafting on and overall ADP identify the best value players and target those guys in your draft.

I do them for two reasons:
1. I can't wait for the actual drafts and I find it kind of fun;
2. I use it to try different strategies to see what players I can get from various spots int he draft.
But you have to take it with a grain of salt. On fantasyfootballcalculator.com, they are generally done seriously. It can give you a good idea of when you need to draft certain players you want, what you can expect to have for RBs if you go WR WR, etc.
Last year, I won 2, finished 2nd in one. Mock drafts probably had nothing to do with it, though if you're doing mock drafts in June, you're probably doing a shitload of reading/research and keeping up OTAs, training camp, etc.

Mocks are useful to entertain you until the real draft. If you are doing it to determine when people will be drafted, you're better off looking at ADP rather than a specific mock.

I'm sure it's been said already, but that team is baaaaddd.
ETA: I do a mock per day on average. Only because I'm bored at work in the afternoons. My main reason for doing them is to try and find what draft position I think is best, in case I get to pick my spot early. So far I like the 4-6 spot this year. Had a pretty nice draft in the 8 spot last week though. That team just for shits and giggles:
QB - T. Brady
RB - Reggie Bush, MJD, Tre Mason, Carlos Hyde
WR - AJ Green, B. Marshall, V. Cruz, R. Cooper, Mike Evans
TE - J. Cameron, Antonio Gates
PK - M. Crosby
DST - Bengals
