Why does Cuban seem to keep coming up empty on landing the big fish FA?

He seems like a good owner who gives his players everything they need and I'd consider Dallas a big market, but they don't seem to get much consideration the past few times they've wanted to make a play for some of these guys.
I'd just think a perennial playoff team with a recent championship on their resume would be a pretty attractive destination.

I bet he is a dick in negotiations. As in, I bet he isn't willing to overpay these guys immediately so their agents turn away.
But thats just, like, my opinion, man.

I don't think I'd like to be so directly and blatantly micro-managed and scrutinized by the owner of my team. I know owners are supposed to be involved but Cuban is a household name and public figure whereas I can't tell you the names of a lot of owners in the nba.
I'm not saying he is doing anything wrong, just that it could rub some players the wrong way. Lebron has enough pressure on him already, I don't think he'd enjoy Cuban basically in the huddles during the game.

Jerry Jones

They already picked up chandler. In previous years they've picked up Terry and Kidd. Not huge names but still they've done whats needed to make the playoffs and have success.

He was already quoted this off season when FA started that he wasn't offering max contracts to anyone. Why would any big name player entertain the thought of going there if they aren't getting max money?

If the spurs have shown anything it's that you don't need superstars. Build a solid starting lineup with a great bench.
Keep in mind how close the Mavs were to knocking off the spurs this year.

I think dirk is a problem. For a long time, elite players (their agents) did not see him as a legit title team building block. Then as soon as he does win, he's kinda too old to make long term commitments to. And the Mavs will always play 2nd fiddle (or 3rd) in Dallas.

Just my guesses:
Dallas isn't as good a city as Miami, NYC, LA, etc.
Dirk is the star in Dallas, but he's getting old and isn't part of that team USA vibe that most of these big fish FAs belong to. (LBJ, Kobe, Durant, CP3, etc.)
Some people might look at Cuban in the same light as Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder, etc. (Loud mouth who spends money, but doesn't actually listen to people who know what they are talking about.)

Dallas is a second rate city to big bro Houston which has a history of landing big fish

Probably because there really aren't that many superstar free agents to be had.
It's very hard to land them.
I mean, how many teams in the past 10 years have landed superstar free agents? Very few.
