Let's face reality, people stayed together into their retirement out of necessity.
It's difficult to have a relationship with anyone for fifty, sixty years. People get bored, tired of the mundane bullshite. Life becomes a job to some and people feel dead, numb.
The demands placed on the US labor force are immense, especially when you consider the dual income society at work. It's rigorous, and it fricks with many.

I don't know how old you are, but if you think like this, then no sense in you ever hooking up to get married.
Marriage is a complete work in progress from day one till one dies. You SO is not only your lover, but also your best friend forever.
