And rightfully so. There is no need for that in sports.

Yes there was a racist past here. Segregated teams and don't forget in the seventies when Bama started three black guys in basketball and somebody held up a sign that they were going to the NAACP tournament. Saw it myself.
That was 40 years ago though. 56 years ago for the Chinese bandits but they still play that music today.

I think people shouldnt feel the need to be offended and outraged at every turn. A sense of humor and the ability to shrug off such things could go a long way.
Also, im not one of these "this country is going to hell and a handbasket" crowd

And why should this be okay? Shatner should sue.

Absolutely agree! 100%!
However this isn't one of those incidents that should be shrugged off. It happened, okay fine, over and done with. It simply has no place in our society today though.

I definitely agree to an extent.
I'm also not a fan of telling minorities what they should or shouldn't be offended by. I'm sure there are some Asians that would find the Chinese Bandits get-up and mantra funny, and I'm sure others would be appalled. Being mindful of others doesn't equate to being a pussy in my book, not that that's what you're saying.

So you can't offer an intelligent response so you just deflect?
Also who said anything about suing?

Just takes too much time and effort to get offended by things that a celebrity says or his/her controversial beliefs. Maybe im just not easily offended.
Someone shows me a group of asians wearing american looking masks playing football, the last emotion that would come to me would be offended

I agree. It's pretty much impossible to offend me outside of a personal attack on me or my family. I'm talking about other people. Like... Asians.

I honestly always thought that the "Chinese Bandits" was a compliment and not any kind of derogatory racial slur. Wearing the masks did not seem to be making fun of Chinese people, but rather, was talking about how they were ferocious fighters.
Not every reference to another ethnic group is derogatory. Sometimes, it is meant to honor them or say that the group referring to them wants to emulate them in certain aspects.
Louisiana was racist as could be in 1958, but I am not sure that the Chinese Bandits or these masks were necessarily an example of that.

Chinese Bandits was actually the 2nd string defense but Dietzel would change the entire defensive team instead of just doing one or two player subs because sub rules were different back then. Everybody loves the second string and they got their nickname for being ferocious players even though they weren't as talented as the "White Team" that played both ways.
