This is why competition is healthy:

Local taxi cab companies are working with the city-parish and the Downtown Development District to create designated staging areas for taxis downtown, thereby enabling them to respond more quickly to the growing number of downtown patrons. The plan would set aside as many as 10 metered parking spaces for cabs at various intersections near Third Street, where most of downtown's restaurants and nightclubs are located. "There is a lot of demand for cabs downtown but there is no parking on Third Street," says Keith Wyckoff, manager of Yellow Cab. "This will enable us to have a set place so the customers know where we are and we know where they are going to be. It's just logistics." The staging areas would be in effect at night only. The effort comes as ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft are eyeing the local market. Last week, the Metro Council approved an ordinance clearing the way for ridesharing companies to begin offering service here. Wyckoff says the downtown staging area initiative is not a response to that move, adding it has been in the works for several months. "We've been working on this since at least January," he says. "It just took a while to get all the logistical pieces in place." DDD Executive Director Davis Rhorer says he supports the effort and is working with the city-parish Department of Public Works traffic engineering department to identify the best spots for the cabs. —Stephanie Riegel

I like how they're trying to pretend that it's not in response to Uber. El oh fricking el, you idiots.

Why didnt they do this before Uber? They are selling the public short.

Yall will really like uber, assuming it didn't get handicapped by stupid fare regulations. Did it?

Just the mere allowance of a company into the market, that hasn't even established itself here, is enough to get them working to improve.

fricking right, Uber is legit, can't wait

I think it would be great if everyone decided to just use Uber instead.

Any idea how long until Uber gets up and running in BR?
Posted on 7/2/14 at 10:54 am to Golfer
The most frustrating thing about it is the fact that demand has obviously been here, but they chose to just not do anything about it.
Yellow Cab is getting what they deserve. I hope Uber destroys them.

Like they just built Third Street or some shite? Your service blows dick, competition comes in and threatens you and now you act like you care. Eat shite, Yellow Cab. Unless I'm really in a bind, once Uber is up and running, they will get all of my money when I need a ride.

City goverment will make it just a pain to operate in Baton Rouge for Uber and others. Then the palms will get greesed and back to same ole.

Not true, so far, it will actually be easier for Uber and Lyft to operate here than in NOLA. BTR area will get the services first, most likely before football season starts.
