quote:quote:Finally someone sees this. Given the criteria I don't even think that Saban would be my first choice nowadays.
I think from scratch is what people are failing to see.
Not too many people on that list walked into a situation like Miles did. That is no knock on Miles, just apples to oranges with so many factors.
Why'd they abandon that criteria immediately at #2?

I think based on the fact that Meyer has done pretty exceptional at every place he's been. Zook was fired and he made Florida a juggernaut.

Athlon sports said it so it must be true. Fire him. Clearly we have all the evidence we need.

He loses games he should win--Ole Miss twice, Tenn, Clemson, Penn State off the top of my head

Wanna list the games Saban (the number 1 coach on that list) lost here that he should have won? It's a much worse list than Miles.

All coaches lose games they should win.
The guy who is #1 on the list lost to ULM, Utah, Choklahoma, and Auburn (3 times) off the top of my head.
How many of those coaches ahead of Les do you really believe would win more games, Sec titles and NC's than Les has?

Not disagreeing with that but he didn't build anything from the ground up, definitely not where he is now.

Stoops appeared in 9 BCS Bowls and is the only coach to win all the BCS Bowls.
Miles appeared in 3 BCS Bowls
It's a pretty close comparison

If anything that makes me think even less of Mack Brown.

too bad you guys are giving the magazine credibility by discussing it. ignore 'the experts' !

My late-night piddly comments:
- It would be interesting if they would post the head-to-head records of each vs the others. I think Les only has a losing record vs Nick.
- Meyer has done well. But he left UF as a dumpster fire. Really, how can you leave arguably the best coaching job in CFB in such a state? Urban did.
- Les is top 3 IMO - behind only Nick and Spurrier.
- The shadow of 1/9 is still cast. It will haunt us 'til we win another NC.

I like Les, but to me he isn't a top 10 coach. Not x's and o's and coaching ability wise. Now, he does delegate that to his assistants, whereas several other coaches ahead of him probably take more of the actual coaching player development upon themselves. I dont think Les being ranked #17 is that bad really. This means that there are over 100 other coaches that arent viewed as good as Les. Something to feel good about.

To be fair, I can only think of 1-2 seasons where there was more than 2 decent teams in the big 12 in the last 14 years.
Oklahoma has had a cake walk in that time.
As far as the wins in BCS games.. Oklahoma's wins against FSU and Bama seem to be the only impressive ones. Washington St lucked its way into the Rose and UConn needs no explanation.
The only reason big game Bob is on that list is b/c he beat Saban in the sugar bowl

I don't get why people think so highly of Richt. I wouldn't put him in my top 20.
2 SEC Championships in 13 years and no NC's at a school like UGA. The Good old boy system must still be strong in Georgia

I love it.
The winningest coach in CFB the last 9 years is ranked as the 17th best coach.
Priceless.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How many over the years walked into a similar situation as Miles and fluorished? Answer. Very few
Other than Jimmy at Miami and Shaw at Stanford,I'm
at a loss. Both of whom left or will leave for the NFL.
Miles had no control of what he inherited.
Why couldnt he do as well as anyone else starting from scratch? And he's getting better every year. How many game mgt mistakes did he make last year?
You know like trying a 55 yarder with your OL as your defense.
Obviously,% wise, its much easier to build from scratch than maintain a high level program. In fact, maintaining anything in the top 5% for 9 straight years is excellent leadership. Look at your own business or school. At whatever company u work for, go ahead and take over the region of the top performing Regional and see just how easy a transition it is "to maintain". And after 9 str8 years of kicking butt give all the credit to the guy before u for laying down the freaking foundation back in 05.
One last thing. When did Saban officially quit and when was National Signing day that year? How many recruits did Les lose while getting his family and coaching staff situated on the run?
Does anyone remember all the lies Saban told LSU, the players and recruits and then quit with no notice in January in the heat of recruiting season.
Saban did leave the program in good shape but its not like Miles just walked in and sat down behind a desk and won all these games.

the narrative is old and, at this point, it's to the point where i don't even care. miles will always be the butt of jokes because of his quirky demeanor. but, regardless of what the pundits want to say, he runs a top 5 college football program and puts his players in the nfl at a higher rate than anyone in college football. we're lucky to have him
