Well, thankfully, next week I'll be going from the hell known as McAllen TX to the apparent mediocrity that is known as Midland TX.

The only real things I know about Midland/Odessa come from Friday Night Lights and Heroes. The only thing I know there is to do there is watch high school football. But there also seems to be a lot of people moving there for oil money, and I've heard the town is pretty young.

So people familiar with the area, any recs? Places to hang out, places to eat, things to do, what the people at large are like, etc. Thanks for any help yall can provide.

I split my time between Midland and Houston, I'm here right now. It's a hell of a lot better than McAllen, but it's definitely not that exciting. Wall Street Bar and Grill and Garlic Press are both very nice local restaurants, The Bar on Missouri Ave is a pretty fun spot at night. Basin Burger House also has a cool patio. I honestly don't go out a ton here though, but I know it is there. Lots of golf too.

There are a lot of young people but unfortunately there isn't a centralized living/bar area where they all are. If there were I actually think it would be a lot of fun. There is quite a bit of money here too- I've seen several R8s, GT-Rs, Lambos, etc. it's odd to see in a place like this. There's also a definite small old money contingent that seems to be extremely influential. I'm sure people will trash on it ITT but it really isn't that bad.

Since the field manager got fired, not one single person in our office can be talked into moving there, even with a big raise

Midland has a beer barn and a Chili's. That's all I know.

In the city, the population was distributed as 29.9% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.

I've been here 8 years. I have really good friends that are from here now. It's actually a really good place to live and work. Better than a whole lot of places in the South. Most people who talk bad about it have never been here. I'm a pretty young guy and have made a sh*t pot of money all because of my circumstance here. All my friends in Houston can't believe the lifestyle I live. Do your time and embrace the local 'influence' and they'll treat you like family. Try to get out and play some golf at one of the country clubs. Also, a lot of Ole Miss alumni out here.

Tumbleweed. Constant wind and blowing dust. It is the worst place on earth. You can't walk around without getting grit in your eyes, hair and teeth.

I've lived in West TX, South TX, and I'm moving to East TX (Carthage) on Monday.

I enjoyed West TX muchhhh more than South TX. Midland actually has some white women and the bar scene is decent, I always did the majority of my partying in San Angelo though and there's a college with a lot of cute country girls. If you can live in San Angelo as opposed to Midland, I would do that.

There is one thing in Midland/Odessa and that's oil. You have a frickload of hands making good money and it's hard to find any single girls because every other swingin dick is exactly the same as you. There are also a lot of wealthy white families in Midland but they are veryyyyy secluded, you won't see them unless you hang out downtown.

Are you a pretty good fighter? How are you with handling your liquor? There are a lot of men in West TX and not many females so I can guarantee you that you'll get in at least one fight while you're there so if you go out make sure you have a decent sized group with you.

If you have any questions just holler, I know every square inch of that area.
