Anonymous NBA scouts on 2014 Draft prospects

quote:
Elfrid Payton, 6-4 guard, Louisiana. "He must be doing well in workouts because I hear his name rising big time, but I'm not as impressed as most people. Can't shoot a lick -- like at all. That's a huge glaring negative. He'll be one of the better defenders in this draft. Gets into the paint whenever he wants. He's getting a lot of buzz, but I'm not big on the guy. Point guards that can't shoot, that's a tough thing."
quote:
Johnny O'Bryant, 6-8 forward, LSU. "Very skilled post player. I like the fact that from Year 1 to Year 2, he worked on his body. Now he can score over those long athletes. One of the sleepers in this draft. He's an old-school, back-to-the-basket low-post scorer. He reminds you of Al Jefferson
quote:
Andrew Wiggins, 6-8 forward, Kansas. "Just a freak athlete. He'll be one of the top 10 or 12 athletes in the NBA. What concerns me is his motor. Does he care enough? Does it matter to him? I just don't think he has any 'f--- you' in him. I've watched him a lot since high school, and there are times you don't know he's on the court. Then again, for someone who got so maligned, he still averaged 17 and 6 in one of the best conferences in America as an 18-year-old. Shows how warped our perspectives are."

Well being a freak defender with a broken jumper who gets to the goal at will worked out ok for Rondo.

If you can't see the difference in the games of al-Aminu and Rondo/Elfird Payton then I don't think you should be posting in NBA threads.

wellll now we can, but at this point before playing a game in the league.....

Aminu is a terrible example

He may be right, but he also failed to mention that a guy with the exact same profile has also been successful. Even down to the rangy frame and freak hands

quote:
Chane Behanan, 6-6 forward, Louisville. "He does nothing for me. That kid can't get out of his own way."
quote:
Doug McDermott, 6-8 forward, Creighton. "He's going to be better than people think. People talk about footspeed and who he's going to guard, but when a guy is as skilled offensively as this kid is, you'll find a spot for him. Will he be a liability defensively? Maybe, but he's going to punish you at the other end. I don't think he'll score in as many ways as he did in college. He'll be more of a spotup shooter, but he does that at an incredible level."
Thought this one was interesting. I was curious as to how scouts would look at him.
quote:
Julius Randle, 6-9 forward, Kentucky. "He's strong and quick, but he's got to find another way to score. He's not going to be able to overpower people like he did in college. I like his motor. You can rely on him to bring it every game. I think he's got a little more skill than he showed at Kentucky. The foot with him is obviously a question. He has an unhealed break in his foot. It's true. But he played the whole season on it probably. He's adamant he can continue to play on it. I think he should have surgery, but he probably should have had surgery during the season, too."
Honestly, I think he re-injured it during the NCAA Tournament but played through it. He didn't seem hobbled by it during the season. Unless his cramp issues weren't cramp issues and were in fact foot issues.

Can Payton hold onto the ball for 20 seconds and dish out in hopes of his teammate making it?

I don't even know how to approach that question... Sure?

quote:
Jabari Parker, 6-8 forward, Duke. "He's ready to help you now. I think he has a chance to be really, really good. I have reservations about a true position. I don't think he can guard threes. He puts a lot of pressure on the defense because he's looking to score all the time. I don't believe he can turn around a franchise's fortunes. If that was the case, you should be able to beat Mercer by yourself. His weight is a question for sure. He's the kind of kid who can gain 10 pounds in a couple of days with his body and eating habits."
It's an odd feeling to see the inherent flaw in this logic, but still kind of agree with it.

I think Parker has a frick you mode mindset, but I think long NBA 3's and 4's may be able to stop him from getting there. He'll need to develop a Melo post game to counter the Batums of the world.

Payton will be the best true PG out of this draft. ( I consider Smart and Exum more of shooting guards than a PG.)
There are PLENTY of really good PGs that have issues shooting. Hell, there are plenty of good players overall that have issues shooting.
If you can get to the rim at will and create for yourself and for others, it doesnt make the shooting issue nearly as big. And Payton can do that. And he knows hes not a good shooter from deep, which is why he rarely shoots it from deep.
Payton was also the only player in college basketball to average at least 15ppg, 5assists, 5 rebs, and 2 steals in the 2013 season. And he did it again this past season, averaging 19ppg, 6rebs, 5 assists, and 2 steals. He also won the award that goes to the Nations Top Defender.
And, even though hes a JR, hes only 20 years old. Hes just 3 weeks older than Joel Embiid, and just 2 weeks older than Smart. Hes very very young. And still growing. He was 5'10 his SR year, 6'1 when he signed, and now hes 6'4 with a 6'8 wingspan.
Hes going to be a very good NBA player. And is 1 of those PGs that can score, assist / create for himself and others, rebound, and play great D. A "do it all" type of PG.

Julius Randle is going to have a good career IMO.

Coach K was having to take Jabari for defensive reasons against freaking Mercer.
That scares the heck out of me.

I don't know about him simply because he didn't have to show a finesse game in college. He's not 6'11 so he's not Z-Bo so that power shite isn't working. If he can hit a 17-footer, he'll be solid.

He just plays way too damn hard to be bad IMO.
