add a few more million to that numbe

I can very comfortably say a "few million" didn't watch as part of watch parties and at bars. There are an estimated 317 million Americans, so a few million would be about 1% of America watched at bars/watch parties.

Yet again, no other sports are including all these numbers. You don't think Cardinals and Red Sox fans were packing bars watching the World Series?

I don't know many people that have been watching the games at home. Most are going to bars to watch. Its a lot more common with soccer than it is with anything else.

People like watching hyped up

Hyped up probably it was the most important game we've faced and really a defining moment of the USMNT. If that game doesn't generate at least a little excitement about the sport, I don't know what will.

I really have faith after that game that we can compete against Germany and make it past the group. That would be the biggest accomplishment in US soccer history.

I wonder what the ratings will be when we play at 11:00 on Thursday

I will guarantee you that at least twice as many people watched the USA/Portugal game in bars than Cardinals/Red Sox fans watched in bars.

Hell, here's videos of 2 bars in just Birmingham that didn't have anyone watching when the World Series was on:

Then add in places that huge crowds like Chicago where they had 20K watching in one place LINK and Kansas City LINK. It was like this all over the country.

Most of the people I know are watching it from home. I don't disagree the watch parties are awesome, but it would take some serious facts to make me believe a "few million" were watching at bars/parties. It's simple demographics.

I watched the game at a bar, and can comfortably say that the entire bar was watching the game.

Exactly. Watching big matches in bars is an entire experience. Its not really like watching the super bowl or WS in a bar at all.

Can a thousand people legally be in the Varsity?

It is because Tiger didn't play in the NBA Finals or World Series.

I don't think there was anyway that didn't violate the code. Could not move anywhere really.

I know of two bars here in Jacksonville were at capacity for both US games so far. Around 500 for one (which markets itself as a soccer watching venue), and around 800 for another that is just a generic chain and not known as a place you go to watch soccer. That's just two that I know of in town.

I was watching a tv show, so I got lazy making my point.

My point was that ratings have more than doubled since '06, so I think it's not just that people tune in because of patriotism only. There is an actual growing interest in the states in soccer. NBC paying that much for the BPL shows me they are thinking so as well.

It's nice to watch a major sporting event without Samuel L Jackson trying to hook me up with a "low rate" Capital One credit card or Flo with her Progressive bundles being shoved down my throat every 10 minutes! It's nonstop and that's what keeps me drawn in.

There absolutely is and it will continue. Youth football is down across the country and I know younger kids seem much more likely to be playing soccer.

It's the only event where I see an entire bar or room never taking their eyes off the tv. Go to a super bowl party and half the people aren't watching.
