Is anyone taking MADM 715 next? I accepted the honors code, but I'm still unable to see the items she has posted. Curious to know if anyone else is having this problem?

So I just applied for graduation. Should be conferred Aug 31st. Only thing is, now that they have released more concentrations, I am thinking about extending getting one over the general. Thoughts?

Wolf, what concentration are you thinking of? Will it take 1 or 2 more classes?
Congrats, by the way on finishing up. I'm completing my 6th and 7th courses this term. Two more next term and one to finish the year. Planning on graduating on Dec. 17th.
I'm going to earn a concentration in Entrepreneurship and Family Business.

Realistically, what do you guys think the benefit of a concentration or specialization will be? I called and spoke to an adviser. Apparently, the diploma will still just say MBA. The only place where it will indicate your specialization will be on your transcript.
Even the project management specialization doesn't offer additional certification. Just an entry on the transcript...

I assume you started the program for professional advancement. If you think the concentration will further enhance that them go for it.
I thought about going from Specialization to Concentration in Finance but I don't think it's worth another $1300 and the diploma/degree doesn't specify either anyway.

Just saw this email the MBA Director sent out. Wonder what it means:
On Behalf of the MBA Director:
A proposal is in the approval process to implement changes to the foundation course requirements. If you have questions about how these changes might affect your fall schedule, please contact Danielle Voumard at 318-797-5213. Until we resolve what will occur with the foundation courses, you may find it beneficial to register for classes not requiring prerequisites including MKT 701, MADM 701, or one of the available electives.

quote:Just saw this too. What does this even mean? My adviser told me none of the classes, technically, have pre-reqs outside of the 2 foundational course.

I also like that they sent this on Friday at 5:40 PM. I'm sure they are all waiting by the phone to answer our questions. (I called the number and left a message.)

I emailed a connection involved with the program and this was their response.
From my understanding this will only affect those who don't have a business degree. Hope this helps

The university is in the process of discussing whether or not the pre-requisite courses should be mandatory for students who have no previous courses/background in Economics, Finance, Accounting, and Statistics. They are close to finalizing a decision, but a final decision is yet to be made. Students will know of the final outcome; you will receive an email with the final decision.

I will be thrilled if they eliminate the foundation course requirements! While I don't have an undergrad business degree, I do have years of professional experience and a masters degree in another field. I believe I'm equipped to succeed in any course in this program without prerequisites. I think there are many students who have similar circumstances. The foundation courses seem like a waste of time and money.

While I agree, there has to be some sort of requirement for eligibility other than a Bachelor's Degree. Other MBA programs require certain courses to be taken before admittance. At least with this one, they offer supplemental courses during the program.

One of the things that drew me to this program was that I didn't basically need to get a BSBA while paying graduate credit rates before I could start the meat of the program.
However, based on the complaints I've seen in various classes (acct 701, econ 705, isds 702.) there should probably either be some extra pre reqs or at least a placement/can you do this sort of test.
The number of fellow students that will have a hard time with the program as it currently stands due to a lack of basic math skills is sadly higher than I think the program wants to admit.
I'm not sure how they could even think about dropping prerequisites. I'll admit the acct701 and badm700 being similar classes was a shame, but I think the answer is to improve acct701 so it's not basically an acct 101 class with a slightly different spin.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of them dropping the pre-reqs myself given the admission requirements are pretty low to begin with. In fact, I think they should probably split the Econ and Stats pre-reqs into 2 separate classes because that course is mostly Stats with Econ bolted on as an afterthought. I really liked the accounting pre-req but agree the Acct 701 course was a review of the same material. It needs to be more than that.
And I'm no math whiz, but I am also shocked by the number of students struggling with fairly basic math in these courses. I've needed to watch a few Khan Academy videos to refresh my memory on some concepts, but some of these people seem totally incapable (or unwilling) to brush up on this stuff without the professor holding their hand.
(I do like the new specializations / concentrations, though. That's a nice improvement, but I'm probably still going to just stick with my original Finance concentration path.)

I've also noticed the issues with simple math amongst fellow students. I catch myself asking how these people got into an MBA program. If anything, the requirements for the program are too laid back imo.

Agree with you DieDaily and Jeaux Cool - this is a Graduate program in BUSINESS. The professor should not have to hold hands on basic and even intermediate math concepts that those with a Bachelors in Business would have learned in freshman or sophomore year.
Put simply, Graduate classes should be HARDER than undergrad classes. It's an advanced degree. Sometimes that gets lost.
Apologize in advance if I'm coming off hard but if I were to seek an advanced degree in a non-business field like literature or history, I'd go in assuming I'd have to take pre-req's and get up to speed.

Agree 100% SoCal. Seems like people are expecting things to be easy and when they aren't they're complaining about it.

You nailed it, Cool. When pursuing an MBA degree, we should all assume and EXPECT it to be hard.
I'll be honest, I've had moments in this program when I've complained about assignments that I felt were hard. It was more from frustration, and the fact that I received my Bachelor's degree 27 years ago and was rusty as I got back into the study mode.
But I really want this program to challenge us. I do not want to "buy an MBA". It needs to be challenging enough that we learned something worthwhile. Then when we're done we'll be proud of the hard work it took.
