Because I'm bored, there's no real sports to dig into right now.

So, a question for the NFL personnel gurus:
This Armstrong kid, the center from Grand Valley St, he got invited to the NFL Combine from a division 2 school.

How do those guys (kids from lower levels that get invited to the Combine) tend to do?
Do they usually make NFL rosters? Sometimes? Rarely?
I mean, not every D-1 player got an invite; and every year we hear about some hidden gem emerging.

I honestly don't know, do they take these guys to the workouts for show, or are they really considered serious prospects?

I'm just curious I guess. I figure Goodwin will be a short-term fix, but will be gone in a year or so. Hopefully Lelito will be the longterm answer, but do you think the Saints might plan to keep Armstrong around a year or so on the practice squad, with the idea being to develop him (or see if they can)?

I've been reading that Lelito is doing very well and taking most of the 1st team snaps. I think Goodwin is just the safety option. I think from their experience from Kruetz, they want to give the potential future the first shot. Kruetz was kind of a panic move, and it potentially lost us a game or two that year. I doubt Goody would have performed as bad as Kruetz (his heart wasn't in it), but if you think it's close, go with the young guy.

It's also been reported that they're high on Lelito, and they want him to win it.

In regards to Armstrong, who knows. I do know that we have one of the larger scouting departments in the NFL, and it's helped us find some small school gems. The roster we've built is a testament to that.

Before Goody re-signed, I did a 53-man roster during a break at work with a co-worker. We both got a "sleeper" roster pick.

He picked Brandon Coleman. I picked Armstrong.

My pick was partly based on need/depth at center at the time, but I really believed he could be one of those guys who makes the roster based on preseason production.

His resume of being a two-time Div2 Best OL nominee & recipient just screams "under-rated" to me. Knowing he has played LT, RT, RG, LG, and Center in college, I thought his versatility made him a perfect pick for a backup spot, at a postion of need.

Then Goody signed, and now I'm penciling in "practice squad" for Armstrong the next two years.
