Can anyone provide some tips on targeting king mackerel in the gulf? In the past, it has always just been a by-catch but I would like to start targeting them if possible just to add another type of species to the potential catch.

Is free-lining live bait out the back of the boat while bottom fishing an effective way to do it or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Free line whole pogey and hope the sharks aren't around

That's what we usually do

Put paging Capt ST in your subject. dude was on the go fast KM circuit for years. In fact, he's so good at targeting KM, that he lucked up and chummed up a wahoo this past weekend.

I saw a bunch of them this weekend in South Tim. Took a long shot on a big one but it pulled out as he ran

From what I hear the MMR guys will be down there fishing the ABC rodeo. They are pretty good at catching a bunch of different species, especially Kings. I've heard there may be some trolling involved. Good luck.

Fun catching; not much fun eating.

troll something shiny, with 6' leader; or free line semi-injured live bait. I used to use white trot with air bladder punctured.

i really have never understood the appeal of catching king mackerel.

they taste like shite.
they fight like shite, except a couple of decent runs.
too much good stuff at the rigs to worry about some trash fish like kings.
