Extremely challenging but lots of fun. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow. Any tips on how to get better? I feel like I forget everything as soon as the ball is inbounded

Where did you officiate at?

Double socks, comfortable shoes (new balance), extra whistle, and hydrate.

Duck.
No seriously don't get knocked out from a loose ball.

How many calls did you mess up. How many players, coaches, or parents cursed you out

Just takes time. Be confident and learn to tune out everything.

And then?

And how old were the players you officiated?

Being a baseball ump seems way more enjoyable.

Volunteered once to ref a tournament for handicapped kids (physical and mental). Nothing like fricking something up and being called a dumbass by these kids (who were pretty good players btw) and knowing they were right. So yeah, it's challenging.

So basically you're out of shape?

That's just normal officiating if you're calling kid's games.

Yep. I've done both and every call is bitched about in basketball. Baseball is way more chill. It used to make me laugh how intense some of these guys get about intramural basketball games

This upcoming football season will be my third year officiating HS football. I'm not sure what the mechanics of officiating basketball are or if there are any, but assuming there are mechanics involved you always want to look like you know what the hell you're doing. Sell the shite it out of your calls because it's a lot harder to question them if you that. I didn't realize how choreographed officiating really was and how much "acting" was involved. Learn you rules too. I know football has a shitload and it's almost impossible to know them all, but again mechanics can hide those missed calls sometimes.
