Why only 5 in the race? Not that it really mattered....

Not a big race fan, but holy crap that gave me chills watching. Its unbelievable how every time you would think there's no way he can gain anymore, he's just picking up huge chunks of track on everyone else. He seemed to keep getting faster. Unbelievable. Thanks for the link

Just an all out sprint for a mile and a half. Amazing.

Greatest horse in my lifetime. Put it in perspective, the time in yesterday's Belmont was 2:28.52. Secretariat broke the record by more than 2 seconds at 2:24. Running the same time in yesterday's race, his margin of victory would be pretty close to the same as 1973.

according to wikipedia, Secretariat was only voted as the second greatest horse of all time behind Man O War by multiple sporting publications. Was this Man O war really better than Secretariat?

No. A side-by-side graph of each of their best times at the typical race distances shows that Secretariat would have beaten Man O'War by ten or more lengths in each.

That is pretty awesome. Don't much care about horse racing, but damn secretariat was amazing.

would have beaten the winner yesterday by five full seconds..how can one three year old horse be so much faster than any three year old before or since?

The second place finisher in the 1973 Belmont - Twice A Prince finished at 2:28.2...31 lengths behind.
So yes...Secretariat would have beaten Tonalist by between 31-32 lengths.

Paging Aspercel,
Is there any database out there of historical race odds?

I really was interested in finding the odds against Secretariat but would be cool to dig for any.
