Rand Paul’s Joke at Texas GOP Convention Is Not Going Over Well With the Left

In a speech at the Texas GOP Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) cracked a joke at Democrats’ expense that’s sure to rile up his political opponents.
“Mr. President, you love to trade people,” Paul said, according to Politico. “Why don’t we set up a trade? But this time, instead of five Taliban, how about five Democrats? I’m thinking John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi…”
The crowd reportedly erupted in cheers.
Sen. Paul was referring to the Obama administration’s controversial decision to release five members of the Taliban from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He was also clearly not serious.
“I don’t know about y’all, but I’ve been a little bit annoyed with the president,” Paul said. “Releasing five Taliban senior officials is not only against the law, it’s illegal and wrong and he should never have done it,” he told the audience.
When he was later asked about the comments during a news conference, Paul reiterated that he was only joking about trading Democrats. He also included a joke in his explanation of his previous joke.
“It was a joke. Except for Nancy Pelosi, I was serious about her,” he said, later adding, “Well, I mean, it’s humor, and I hope there’s room for humor. I thought it was funny. It was meant to be humorous.”
Not everyone saw the humor. There was plenty of outrage over the joke on Twitter, with at least one user suggesting he was comparing Democrats to the Taliban.

Some would agree with the comparison of the Dems and the Taliban.

Actually they aren't really that comparable.
Releasing the 5 terrorists can no way be spun to be good for the country.
Getting rid of the 5 people he mentioned and never having them show their faces in the US again would be quite beneficial for the country.
Well, actually it would be like killing 5 roaches in a vermin-infested kitchen. Unless you do something to systematically get rid of them there will just be 10 more to take their places.

ETA: Paul was crass and unstatesmanlike, but if you want to be president, you have to say stupid shite like this that fires up the kind of crass party hacks who attend state conventions. Back in the day, nobody outside the hall would have known about it. Now it's on twitter within minutes.

A talk show host on the local radio here in DC proposed another trade; one marine in a Mexican jail for 20,000,000 illegal aliens.

Aside from economics, logic, decency, honor, responsibility, duty, the one thing that democrats absolutely cannot understand is humor.
They are stuck in third grade fart joke level of humor.

Yep. The last two presidential outcomes are evidence of this.

I'm not really a big fan of Rand. So I will say it like this, frick the Democrats.
Trade? I'd give those bitches away for free.

Stupid thing to say. For someone the media is going to be gunning for, incredibly stupid. You can't rail on the exchange and then make jokes about it either.

People who will be offended about an obvious joke like this wouldn't vote for him any way. I've heard this joke a few times since the swap and laughed. I don't love it coming from Rand but it wouldn't keep me for voting for him. And it's certainly not going to keep Republicans from voting for him. Many independents are just as fed up.

Rand created a "two fer" for the idiots on the Left. First, they're looking for any excuse to bash Rand Paul. If anybody doesn't know why, well, those people probably dont even visit this board.
Secondly, nobody does victimhood like the Left. It is a core ingredient of their DNA.
PS - the Taliban wouldn't take those idiots, anyway.

Again, they can bash away. Anyone who gets outraged over this was never going to vote for him. He has to focus on winning the Republican primary. That clip will be old by the time it counts.

Rand is intelligent enough to know that this gets picked up. He wants to mix it up. It keeps his name out there and anything that pisses off the D base of anti-humor leftists is red meat for Republicans.

The Democrats are the American Taliban.

Screw-the-media (MSM version). The sanctimonious/hypocritical liar have lost all cred, as they have become the Pravda of reportage.
Paul is doing the right strategic thing, in that he is applying the Alinsky MO of public derision...and if or when the MSM jumps in, he can whack them too. Candy Crowley...moderator in the Presidential debate. Sheeeshh! The MSM are sitting ducks. And the only ones that will howl are the Progressive bots who will never change their vote anyway.
Gloves off. Being "crass" - given the REAL and utterly farcical political dialogue in this nation - is more of a joke than a real joke.
Go get em' Rand! Gloves off.
