No, I mean on your laptop. Check the wireless connection details to see what has been negotiated between your laptop and your router. It may only be connecting at wireless-g speeds for whatever reason.

Nowadays you can send your internet signal wired through the plugs/outlets in your walls.

So it's as fast as wired, but "wireless" in that you don't have a cord running from your ethernet card to your modem/router.

The speed you get through your electrical wiring is going to be very dependent on the wiring itself, whether the router plug is on the same circuit as the other plugs, etc., and it will never be as fast or reliable as "real" wired networking.

Sorry for the bump, just seeing if anyone else has any ideas.

Have you checked the speed your laptop connects at yet?

NOT a speed test
NOT what settings/modes/whatever

I want to know what the connection speed is when you view the connection details on your laptop.

And presumably full signal strength since you're so close to the router?

Install a wifi channel scanner on your phone to see if there is any major interference. If there's nothing obvious (or if you can't make heads or tails of it), check for an updated driver for your laptop's wifi. Also check for updates for your router firmware.

I have the most up to date router firmware. Do you have a particular channel scanner app that you'd recommend?

No, but honestly it probably won't help you much anyway considering you've already tried several channels.

But the bottom line is your laptop is only negotiating a speed of 72mbps with your router (and you should expect to see 50-75% of this speed when running speed tests), so your problem lies in that neighborhood. Wireless-g tops out at 54mbps, so presumably all the "n" stuff is working properly.

Last thing is maybe look in your router setup for something about "channel bonding". By default a lot of routers have this setting off to reduce interference risk, but it maxes out at only half the speed compared to when you turn bonding on.

Edit: if it doesn't say anything about "channel bonding", then look for "channel width" where you probably have a choice between 20 or 40 mhz. Choose 40.

Under channel width, all I see is 20mhz only or mixed (40 and 20).

I'm not seeing channel bonding anywhere. What tab would it be under?

That's it, the choice between 20 and 40mhz.

Is it currently set to 20mhz only? Change it to mixed and then disconnect/reconnect the laptop.

Also, I think the lack of a "40mhz only" option means you are looking at the 2.4ghz settings. Do you see 5ghz anywhere?

I've found that my Comcast wireles modem has to be rebooted every now and then because the signal strength "hangs up." I was doing the LSU game a week or so ago and wireless speeds kept dipping to 1 mb/s.

Finally rebooted the modem and speeds picked up and remained consistent at 65-72 mb/s.

Only drawback is it takes 5 minutes to reset the cable signal, wireless signal, etc.

No, this router is only a 2.4ghz, not dual band. It still boasts that it supports up to 300 mb/s though, which is why I'm kinda stumped on how I'm getting 1/4 of my wired connection.

I'm trying to mixed mode now, I'll let you know what happens.

edit: still getting around 20mb/s with it set on mixed mode.
