As far as resell goes I wouldn't worry about it. If you spend 2k on a setup you won't be able to sell it for 2k. Your probably looking at resell value if it's in great condition about $1700 to $1800. With a $750 dollar setup your looking at about a $550 to $600 resell value. 2k will buy a damn fine rifle that he will never need to Upgrade. I would recommend something in stainless as the up keep is easier. The Sako A7 in stainless with a meopta meostar in 4x12x56 would be a great setup. That would put you at about $2000. Another scope would be the new Zeiss HD5. Caliber wise I would recommend .270, 30/06, .308. or 7 mag. A Swarovski z-3 would be a fine scope for around a grand also. Look at cameraland.com for the demo scopes, that's were you will find your best deals.

Go check out a pawn shop. Find a good deal to get him started.

This brings up a question I had.
Where do people usually buy their guns?
Just having to search pawn shops for good deals? Online Auctions? Or do Gun Shows provide the best prices?

gun shows? No, they are a rip off. Pawn shop gems can be found, just be careful. I have bought some find guns at pawn shops for good deals. Bass pro, academy, and walmart all
have good prices on guns. Or Check around on Louisiana Sportsman classified, bayou shooter, and craigslist, as there are good deals posted sometimes. And last, check with any hunters you know, most dont sell guns.. but some may be willing to part with one.

It's about that 10 minutes of extra light it gives on that 100 yard shot at dusk.
And the quality of pics that can be taken thru the scope as well

GunBroker.com is the best online source.
Pawn shops absolutely suck in the NOLA area- don't waste your time, although I'm sure they're a lot better on the Northshore, BR-area, etc.
Gun shows are a hit or miss, mostly a miss.
I use a Ruger M77 in 30-06 with a Nikon 3x9x40 and its never given me any trouble.

I have had a BDL 30-06 with 3x9 leupold for 15 years. Love the gun and will never deer hunt with another rifle. You will not be disappointed.

Anybody have a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2? Looks like a sweet rifle in 30-06
Posted on 5/26/14 at 9:48 pm to Swampeast
Like other have said the Tikka T3 is a fine rifle. I have one in a 7mm-08 and it hasn't failed me yet. You can get a rifle and a Leupold VX-3 for around $1,200 and have an excellent setup.
Tikka T3 for $678
Leupold VX-3 for $499

Agree right here. -06 or the .270 w/VX1, 2 or 3. If he likes pretty go with the BDL. If it doesn't matter go with the synthetic ADL. Both have the same SWEET 700 action. I have both and like them the same.

Winchester Model 70 in .30-06 throw a Zeiss 3x9 on it and it'll last him a lifetime.
There is nothing more to add to this thread.

I have two of them, a .257 WBY in wood/blued and a synthetic in .308. I am very pleased with both of them. I also got both of them new for well under $600.

$2k will buy you everything you want in a deer rifle
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
i would go with a tikka t3 in 270 or 308 and spend the rest on a nikon, leupold or zeiss scope of 3x9-40mm

How about the Ruger American rifle in 30-06?
Posted on 5/27/14 at 7:35 pm to lsu1987
I would not buy and here's why. A Remington model 700 runs $379.00, if I were looking cheap that's what I would go with. You can always customize the 700 action at a later date and the ruger American will always be a cheap entry level rifle.
If you can't afford a $379 rifle then I suggest pricking up a pair of sneakers and a basketball and get started on a new hobby
