It's not a question of affording it. But if I only hunt 2-3 times a year, why spend $1500 on a rifle/scope when a $500 set up will kill a deer at 175 yards?

You can always go out and spend 3 times as much as you need to, but again, for 2-3 times per year........

For 2 or three times a year I would buy the $379 model 700 and put a $150 Nikon Prostaff on it. The Ruger American is not a bad gun for $299 but it's not a model 700.

I shoot a TC Pro Hunter .270 with a Leupold VRX3 3.5x9x50

While I love the rifle and it's accuracy, I don't like that it is a single shot because there have been a couple times that I needed a second shot. A bolt action or semi auto like my Browning .243 would have allowed for a follow up shot

The scope is very nice and i love it way more than the rifle

I will admit I am not a very good shot in general so hate away frickers
