Several months ago just before our last trip to Alaska, my 11 yr old boy asked if I would help him build a bird feeder that would hold "lots and lots of bird seed".

I figured, "why not", and we made it a little project and got 50 lbs of cheap bird seed.

I tried to counsel him that he needed to hang it higher, or else squirrels will get to it.

He tells me it's for the squirrels. The little shite is baiting squirrels. (I should've known better with that kid)

Fast forward 3 months, we're back in Texas and he takes his first round of fox squirrels.

Very interesting observations.

1) The hides are quite pliable and easier to work
2) There is a pronounced fat content under the skin
3) The meat is much lighter than normal. It has a chicken-like appearance
4) Meat was more tender than normal

I never knew diet could alter the meat quality to THAT degree. Food for thought.

Fox's are a bit harder to clean then gray or cat's. I hope you are removing the glands in the arm pits before cooking. By doing that, the meat is more better tasting.

As for as baiting, oh well.

I've never seen squirrel meat look that white before. Very interesting.

When I was at LSU, we had this gigantic pecan tree in the yard of the duplex we leased. The squirrels lived in it and they got soo bad they chewed their way into the ventilation system of the house a few times haha we got fed up with hearing them running inside the walls so we resorted to shooting them. We started cooking them and they were awesome, especially in gumbo. Everybody thought we were nuts to be eating gray squirrels right out the tree, but with them eating a steady diet of pecans, they tasted pretty damn good. All the squirrels I had before were not as good as these. I do agree a good diet for them makes them much more delicious haha

Oh, and like others have said, your son is a little BAMF haha Sounds like a young version of me and my friends growing up.

That's awesome Coastie. One of my favorite parts of being a dad is watching my son pull stunts like this.
