re: Is there a legitimate chance that Jurgen leaves Donovan off the final 23?

At some point, it comes off as ridiculous though. No one thinks Dempsey, Bradley, Howard, Donovan, Jones, Fabian Johnson, Jozy, and Matt Besler are staying home, barring a sudden injury.
Talking about how all 23 spots are up for grabs is cute but it's going to elicit as many eye rolls as a high school sex-ed teacher who says abstinence is the only form of safe sex.

He'll make the 23, but he's borderline being in the starting XI.

Can anybody state definitively that Landon belongs in the starting 11?
yes. me.

I am one of the few in saying that I like Jurgen's methods. Sure, they seemed ridiculous at first, but he's clear as frick with the fact that EVERYONE has to push hard for a place in the squad and that you can't rest on your laurels. That's how it should be in any team. Donovan is not above that. That said, Jurgen knows the quality Donovan brings and will include him in the 23, if not in the 11.
Unless you're Brek Shea. Or Danny Williams.
Or on the current roster, Joe Corona and Julian Green.
ETA: I do agree that it's great for a team that (in theory) the best players play. But it will destroy a team and/or a player if they're not being judged by the same criteria as the other guy. And both are happening/have happened in Jurgen's tenure. If there's one thing I hate more than a guy who talks out of both sides of his mouth, it's a guy that says "everybody gets a fair shake" and then talks out of both sides of his mouth.

I was going to say second after you, but your username is too shitty to type out.
We have roughly eight guys that are locks to start. Jurgen needs to stop fricking around and give star treatment to Bradley, Donovan, Howard, and Dempsey.

I'd say Howard, Besler, Fabian Johnson, Bradley, and Dempsey are the only true 100% locks. Jones is close.
If I had my wish, we'd go with Howard in goal, Chandler at right back, Cameron and Besler in central defense, Johnson at left back, Jones and Bradley in central midfield, Donovan and Zusi on the outside, and Jozy and Dempsey up top. I am flexible though. If Bacon is good enough to start, I'm down. Also, I know Chandler is a crapshoot, so Cameron would be a fine right back. However, I hate all of our central defenders besides Besler. Rongen, you moron. You cost us Subotic.

I get your point, but I think this is a crappy analogy. Klinsmann wanted to motivate the players, and he has done so.

Ok, like I said, Corona's inclusion doesn't make sense for this reason. Shea wasn't included in the final 23.
Danny Williams was playing (and playing well) right up until his knee injuries. He was voted third in the Reading POTY voting.
We know why Green is here. The kid is something special. See if he is ready to perform. If so, it's very possible he's already one of the top 23 players in the pool. If not, he stays home. The only person who lost out here was EJ (not on form) or Shea (not playing).

Landon Donovan is, by most estimations, the best player in U.S. Men’s National Team history – but he isn’t taking a fourth consecutive World Cup appearance for granted. As things stand, Donovan is one of the 30 players vying for 23 roster spots, and while he seems every bit like a lock, Donovan isn’t ready to call himself one and neither is his coach. “I liken it to 2002. In 2006 and 2010, I knew for the most part unless I was awful I was going to make the team,” Donovan told reporters Monday before training at Stanford University. “This time is more similar to 2002 when I was wasn’t sure.” “In that way, it’s as competitive as it’s been personally for me in a long time.”
And that's the point.

My point about Shea and Williams was that they kept getting called in regardless of form and/or playing time.
Posted on 5/19/14 at 7:44 pm to Sheep
Come on man, Shea had to get playtime somehow.

That was Juergen's idea, though I don't think anyone knows how Landon has truly responded to it. It's not like he has followed Juergen's instructions precisely. An incompletely applied, one size fits all motivational strategy isn't going to go over well with everyone. That's just reality. The manager's job is to put together the best team, not the team of players who respond to what would ostensibly motivate the manager.

I'll retweet and favorite angry comments from fans and bloggers.

I'm talking a ceremonial 90 minutes of silence where I'm just sitting on my coach staring at a blank tv crying ever so slightly.
Upon completions of the game(s) I will resume my message board, twitter, Facebook bitching at levels that I have never reached before. I might even attempt to get a #firejurgen type of thing trending.
I will also eat Mexican food that night AND cheer for them in their next game

No star treatments. Everybody has to work their asses off if we are to be competitive.

Jurgen is trying to get every last bit out of Landon for this tournament. He's making him work and I think Landon realizes that. I fully expect Jurgen to say that Landon has looked great in training and is looking like the player we have come to know.
Needless to say I'm being optimistic but I'm also using history as the best indicator as to what we can expect. History has suggested that Landon shows out for the World Cup so I fully expect him to do whatever it takes to live up to that expectation.

I haven't seen Donovan's form at all aside from the last qualifiers and don't follow the USMNT day to day happenings all that closely.
I do feel fairly confident in asserting one thing though:
out of form, out of shape, melancholy, lazy, stoned what have you . . .
Donovan is still the most capable player we can put on the pitch of providing the moments of magic out of little to nothing we'll need, at more than one point, to get by two of Germany, Portugal and Ghana.

Hell of a midfielder.
I don't know the other guys. I didn't keep up with the Champions League this year.
