so it seems like heavy is the way to go

Heavy if you can control it...they're faster.
Karts for tracks that have more straightaways and bikes for tracks that have more turns seems to be the ideal way to do it, but that obviously isn't feasible since you can't change out every race.
I had been going with heavy's but for online play I may switch back to something with more acceleration because of all the wrecks. Nothing worse than being on bowser and getting hit with the finish line in site only to lose out since you can't accelerate for shite.
