ACC, Big Ten Considering Non-Conference Football Games vs. Own Conference

According to ESPN, the ACC and Big Ten are each considering the idea of playing non-conference games against their own conference.
Yes, you read that right. Not games featuring ACC vs. Big Ten, but ACC vs. ACC and Big Ten vs. Big Ten. And the games wouldn’t count in conference standings.
Yesterday, Penn State athletic director David Joyner told ESPN that they have had discussions about playing Big Ten opponents in non-conference games.
“That’s a unique concept we could talk about more,” Joyner said. “That’s a possibility.”
That was followed up by a report this morning from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. ACC athletics directors and coaches have been discussing the very same thing for their own conference.
“Everything’s on the table,” Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross told ESPN.
“I think all the coaches felt like playing each other more, if there was a model for that, we’d be open to it,” NC State coach Dave Doerin said. “They are going to allow us to use that plus-one game in the conference as a nonconference game so that will be interesting to see where it goes. When we don’t have to play Notre Dame, playing Duke or Virginia or somebody from the Coastal that we don’t play will be a discussion we want to have.”
With the number of conference members in the ACC and Big Ten ballooning to 14, teams in opposite divisions don’t play each other very often. It’s worse in the ACC because of the eight-game schedule. Teams in opposite divisions may play each other only one time in 11 years due to the permanent crossover rivalries.
The bylaws of the ACC do not prevent non-conference football games vs. conference members, according to the report. It would be up to the schools to agree to the games. In fact, ACC baseball schools already play non-conference games against teams from their own conference.

So basically, their entire schedule could consist of teams from their own conference? Weak.

Steve Spurrier has been suggesting that the SEC not count cross divisional games in the overall standings for the past couple of years.

I've been campaigning my model for years.
4 16 team conferences
10 conference games
2 non-conference games against whomever
top 4 teams from each conference play a conference tourney
top team in each conference plays in national tourney 4 team playoff
This seems to be the steps everyone is going to anyway without actually saying it (the Big 12 being next on the chopping block it seems)

Yes, there are some schools that oppose Les and LSU's position on scheduling of cross-over opponents because Bama doesn't want to give up Tenn. and UGa doesn't want to give up Auburn. Spurrier has proposed to just let those schedules schedule these "rivals" as non-conference games when they fall out of rotation schedule. Seems like a good idea to me. And I'm sure LSU/Les would be on board with that.

of course you have
gotta hide that the Big 10 is getting worse by the year.
what better way to do that than to only play Big 10 teams during the regular season?

God I can only hope we play A&M soon. For a school with one top 5 finish in 20 years there sure is a lot of chatter

Yep.

its easy to be a top 5/10 team when your conference mates are weak sauce.
has nothing to do with the obvious decline of the Big 10 the last 15 years.

So there is no excuse for A&M to not be a top 10 team every year in the 15 years from about 1995 - 2011 when they joined the SEC right?
Oh wait....

sure there is.
Big 12 was better then than the Big 10 is now.

but it makes sense...if a team beats everyone in their division, aren't they the best team in that division, regardless of how the did with an arbitrary cross-division schedule?

Ohio State vs SWAC 19-2-2
Ohio State vs Big XII 22-5-1
I'm not sure what his point is.

Other than Michigan and Ohio State, I couldn't care less about playing other Big Ten teams. I'm all for getting rid of our annual MAC game, but I'd rather it not be a Big Ten team.

there are more teams in the Big 10 than Ohio State.
again, this would be about protecting the ENTIRE league. Not just 1 or 2 top tier teams.

Or you could look at it as a way for cross divisional rivals to continue playing while still allowing for a rotating conference schedule.
And you were on my short list of people to talk to when I expand the business.

I understand. I'm just bored and fricking with you.

Will this be a mandatory thing? Hopefully not. I definitely see why Ohio State and Michigan want this, but Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, and Nebraska.... I don't see why they would. I'd rather be playing teams like Pitt and Syracuse annually than Iowa and Wisconsin.

hey FWIW, its a brilliant tactic and they seem to be winning the PR battle w/the 9 conference game precursor to this eventual move.
