Mark Zuckerberg Gave New Jersey $100 Million To Fix Newark's Schools, And It Looks Like It Was A Waste

In the fall of 2010, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Oprah that he'd be making a generous gift to Newark, New Jersey. As Oprah said in her Oprah way, "one ... hundred ... million ... dollars"
The plan was to turn Newark into what Zuckerberg called "a symbol of educational excellence for the whole nation," spent on retaining the best teachers, and creating environments that would produce successful students and, one day, graduates.
...
Between 2010 and 2012, The New Yorker reports that "more than twenty million dollars of Zuckerberg’s gift and matching donations went to consulting firms with various specialties: public relations, human resources, communications, data analysis, [and] teacher evaluation." Many of the consultants were being paid upwards of $1,000 a day.
“Everybody’s getting paid but Raheem still can’t read," Vivian Cox Fraser, president of the Urban League of Essex County, was quoted saying.
Today, the money is pretty much gone, and Newark has hardly become that symbol of excellence. . . . .

Maybe next time, he could simply give it to the Fed Gov. instead? We know they would handle it wisely.

If I were him, I would be pissed big time.

Give any government at any level in the US money, they will waste every dollar of it.

If Raheem still can’t read, it is his own fricking fault, he is either too stupid or too uninterested to master the basic skill that a 6 year old of average intelligence can master.
And Zuckerbberg is an idiot to turn that much money over to any political entity with no controls. To expect any school system where the average IQ of the students may perhaps be 85 to become excellent is foolishness.

This makes my blood boil. The amount of waste we see with gov't entities is sickening.
$100 million fricking dollars. Do you know how far that could go in a city like New Orleans without everyone sticking their paws in it? You could build a dozen brand new fricking schools and help tens of thousands of kids, yet these people piss almost half away on "consulting".
Zuckerberg has to be a fricking moron to blindly give out $100 million under gov't care.

This just proves my Old Pappy right - you can't throw money at a problem and expect the problem to go away! ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconbow.gif)

100 million in Newark.
Find a 4-5 thousand seater arena for reading and math night once a week. Free pizza to all who attend. JayZ, A-Rod, KG, Netc. are all guest teachers each week. 45 minutes of math, 45 minutes of reading. Could be televised each week also on PBS and educational material downloadable and given to kids at schools across the country if they wanted to participate as well. Simple math, simple reading, target ages 7-12 because that's your best shot.

OK. So its the gift AND the matching donation.
That means 200 million total. So 20 million on consulting is only 10% - or 'more than' 10%, we are told how much more - of the total. At "upwards" of $125 an hour. That really does not sound insane or out of whack to me. I'm not saying the money wasn't wasted - I'm not saying it was, but spending 10% on consulting at less than $125 isn't by itself evidence of anything wrong.

Based on 38,500 students enrolled, Zuckerberg's gift was over $2,500 per student. That is on top of the over $15,000 that was already being spent per student.

Who was the Mayor of Newark when this gift was made?

Soon afterward, in November, 2012, the Newark Teachers Union agreed to a new contract that, for the first time, awarded raises only to teachers rated effective or better under the district’s rigorous new evaluation system. Those who got the top rating would receive merit bonuses of between five thousand and twelve thousand five hundred dollars.
Isn't that the sort of thing conservatives agree with ?

quote:In addition to my point above about Chis Christie's interference, you may want to note that the Newark education budget is likely well north of $500 million and many of their schools are well overdue for replacement, some being reconditioned factories or 100 year old buildings. The total need for new buildings likely totals over $1 billion.
