ETA: and honestly, I was reading worse by that time. I would read Crichton in the 6th grade and read Jaws in 6th.

People bitch about kids being juvenile, but then do their best to shelter the kids from adulthood and adult themes.

Guarantee that the girl has read and seen worse in her lifetime. Just didn't want dad to know that.

It's my understanding that 2 others spoke against the book, and 4 spoke in support of it.

Also , for the record, the Board allowed the entire passage to be read aloud in the meeting, as well as biblical verses saying those in favor of the book are damned. So it's not exactly like they acted against free speech.
