Do you think that the person who assigned it actaully read it beforehand, or do you think they said "hey.. here's a book written by a local author who can come in and personally talk about the book to the class.. we'll read this one" without having a clue as to what the book contained.

I could only speculate, and it would be lazy to do so.

I imagine there are some redeeming qualities to this novel, or else the author wouldn't have been invited in the first place.

Perhaps this is the type of book that should be assigned to high-school seniors - who are we kidding, by 18 they've done worse than read about sex - for its merits.

It's inappropriate for a middle-school student.

The father in question had every right to question what this school was doing. He deserves an apology, IMO.

Hey buddy, I don't know what kind of person you are or people you hung around with when you were 18. When I was 18, we were all perfect little angels... and would never DREAM about reading about sex, much less doing the sex. Just ask our parents!! And my daughter, who is 16, will be the same way when she's 18. Assuming I let her out of her room by then.
