Go to Watts and get fitted. Then, go on eBay and find that set or 1 model year older of the same set for WAY cheaper. I play every week and still purchase clubs this way. Watts wanted $850 for the set of irons I have now. I go them on eBay for $350. Watts marks up their products by at least $100

Not really
Manufacturers set retail prices for almost all golf clubs
A new set will cost the same a at EW as it would at dicks, golfsmith, and all the other places

I had my golf clubs stolen in a car burglary not long ago and, in need of a full (inexpensive) set to replace them, I bought an entire Strata bag and clubs on line for only $250 or so. I find the irons of this set to be pretty good (even better than my old ones), but the hybrid clubs and the woods are inferior.
But,here's an anecdote: I am a horrible golfer and always assumed that there was no reason for me to pay for expensive or quality golf equipment until I became good enough to justify it. I am now a convert to the belief that better equipment makes one a better golfer. In replacing the hybrids and woods from the Strata set that I bought, I purchased some better known brands like Taylor Made and Calloway. Those clubs have made me a lot better golfer than I was (although I'm still horrible).

To the OP
Get lessons. LSU has the leisure class a couple times a week for several weeks in a row. Its a good value. After you get a relatively consistent swing get fitted for clubs. The loft and lie if the irons does make a difference as well as club length. And have fun while in 95* heat in hour 3 on hole 12.

craigslist always has pretty good clubs for next to nothing. <$100 for clubs.

I was definitely recommend a set of Adams irons. Their longer hybrid irons are super forgiving

all of you that are recommending a box set need to be beaten with the 6 iron from that box set.
Go buy a used set of game improvement irons (Taylor Made or Calloway etc) and add a 3 wood for now. Get a Cleveland sand wedge and a decent mallet putter. Buy all of them used. Hell you can grab a decent forgiving 3 wood from E Watts for $50. Look in the collections of used clubs the usually have sitting together in an oversized bag.
If you do get the box set you'll quickly realize you bought crap and lose confidence.

Yep.

I'd go with the easiest to hit set you can find at a decent price. Look for Ultra Game Improvement irons on Golfworks and buy a set of used clubs online.

Get some Northwestern's at Service Merchandise. Maybe even pick up a dozen Club Special by Acushnet.

I'll sell you my starter set. Got it off craigslist a few years ago, and then moved up to a better used set after a year.
