I said last week that the slogan shouldn't be "better together," it should be "better for me because I get my services subsidized by taxpayers in the unincorporated area."
I am against St. George because it will be expensive as hell but they absolutely have the moral high ground in the argument.
No, you just don't understand how the tax structure works. No one is stealing taxes from people in the unincorporated area. The sales tax generated at the retail establishments like the MoL and Perkins Rowe comes from people from all over. The people who started this petition are the ones who want to take this revenue and keep it all for themselves, shutting out the city-parish that built and maintained the infrastructure.
However, thankfully, the businesses are realizing that the plans of the secessionists are poorly thought out and are choosing to protect themselves by joining Baton Rouge proper. If paying the CATS tax is what it takes, they are clearly willing to take that on.
The Mall of Louisiana isn't delusional like the secessionists, they know their revenue comes from all over, not just this one unincorporated area. The secessionists may not want their children going to school with kids from within the city limits, but the MoL is happy to get their business from everyone in the region, even those customers that might rely on public transportation (gasp).

Even this is not very common.
86% of kids attending schools in the proposed SG actually live there.

How does where MOL's customers come from have anything to do with where MOL's tax dollars go? That is never a one for one equation.
Do the hospital and the mall really think it would be any worse than EBR leadership now? I mean schools crime and racial divides just about can't be worse. Hell if they put forth no plan at all I'd only think slightly worse of them than the current leadership.
And unless this was St Georges plan all along to just force some action by the city then back down, they botched this whole damn thing. I can't believe they still don't have the signatures yet.

quote:This is key. The StG spokesmen keep making asinine comments like this one from Bodi White:
However, thankfully, the businesses are realizing that the plans of the secessionists are poorly thought out and are choosing to protect themselves by joining Baton Rouge proper.
quote:Really? So it's only a "democratic process" if everyone goes along with what you want? I'm pretty sure the business owners are simply exercising their rights.
"It's unfortunate those two big entities interjected themselves in the democratic process,"
I read another quote this morning from Rainey (can't find the article now) where he said that these businesses were denying people's "right to self-determination" (StG's biggest buzzphrase). Ironically, these businesses are merely exercising their own rights to self-determination, so I guess it's only a bad thing when it doesn't benefit the proposed city. Further, the election can still happen, even though the maps would have to be re-drawn.
Having the figureheads of the movement continually spouting off idiotic, overly-dramatic comments like this is most certainly contributing to the reluctance of businesses to be included within the proposed city. Prospective city leaders would be well-advised to execute a more measured, diplomatic approach, particularly when they consistently accuse BR city leaders of acting like children.
