All that no dialogue in no country has to be written in and described. Much better screenplay than Mitty. Hell Mitty wasn't very good and it was even an adapted screenplay, that should have been easier for the writers.

No Country was adapted as well.

You want to know how the Coen Brothers adapted No Country For Old Men? This is straight from their mouths. One of them held the book open and read while the other typed it into the computer.

How that screenplay won the Oscar over There Will Be Blood just blows my mind.

Maybe for basic story and and dialogue.

Read the shooting script

when i took that class, all I really took away from it was the format. you either can write or you cant. no amount of classes will give that to you.

all those classes do is teach you formats and structures. you cant learn content.

i didn't even get formatting out of it.

i spent last summer in screenwriting books and websites learning all of the formatting. I had already written several project scripts, so I barely got anything out of the class. to be honest, i took the class because the teacher wrote a few episodes of Treme and is friends with David Simon. Basically wanted to network

We learned a bunch of subjective bullshite too, like "this event is supposed to happen around this page mark." That's bullshite. You can read scripts that break every rule they tell you. It's all about the content. shite, even some of the formatting stuff is subjective

The truth is that there's a reason the standard is out there. Much easier to get started on that than to reinvent the wheel from the start.

Oh, there is definitely an objective nature to it, but I don't believe in following the formula every time you write. You shouldn't have to have a turning point at page 26 in every script. That's basically what we were told to do. follow the diagram

Easy to grade for the professor. Turn to page 26 and start reading.

Walter Mitty is an extremely boring movie and No Country for Old Men is probably the best movie in the past 10 years. No offense bro, but your class is fricking retarded.

It's too bad your logic couldn't get them to change their minds.

i used every argument possible

4 biggest academy awards (even though I hate the academy, i just assumed the class was like rolltide1987 and used it to lure them in)
Coen Bros vs Ben Stiller
etc
etc

but no

How can a class of screenwriters not watch many movies?

I always keep up with the recent films.
