Future QB thoughts....

I know Brees is far from being done, but he's no spring chicken. I hope the Saints start looking soon. It would be nice to get someone like Aaron Murray, to learn behind Brees.
I know its not a new topic, but do you guys think the Saints target a QB sooner rather than later?

our future starting quarterback is a freshman in college.

Ugh.
Any QB good enough to replace Brees later will need to be drafted high. Doing so now would be a waste of a draft pick.

I believe it's all based on talent and value. If a guy is there that Paeyton believes is the perfect fit for his system and is available at a point that is considered a fall, then we will pick one. I personally don't know if there are any in this draft or not, but Murray is a name I have heard that fits here. Some say it's strictly because he is short, but I have no idea.
I do believe it's best to have the QB of future on the roster at this point in Brees' career, but only if the guy we draft is worth the pick. I don't think it's wise to draft a QB just for the sake of getting one as a just in case

Id rather lock a guy into a rookie contract when he retires

Either way somewhere along the way you're going to have to use a high pick to get one. Why wait? Let someone grow under Brees while hes still got some years left?

thus taking the chance that there is A. no good rookies that year, B. the one you draft is a bust, or C. Brees suffers injury/decline prior to his projected retirement.

because there may not be anyone good in this draft

Mindset.
The mindset is to win Superbowls with Brees right now. Therefore you use those picks on guys who can potentially be starters right away.
I totally understand your thought process, but I don't think planning for the future is the best option when you have a Drew Brees on your roster right now.

most QB's are high picks. While there is the rare Tom Brady out there, this is not the norm

I was commenting to DV where he said we'd have to use a high pick.

It would be better to maximize the rookie contract of a QB. When Brees retires, we will have a reckoning cap wise with all of the money we have continued to kick forward. So there will be a lot of dead money for a year or two.
You want a QB on that rookie contract, earning that money, for 3-4 years.
Also, we are in WIN NOW mode. All players picked need to count.

frick that. We are in WIN FOREVER mode.
EDIT: I don't know, maybe we are in WIN NOW, but we ought to be in WIN FOREVER mode. Screw the mortgage the future after Brees to win now mindset. I want a long lasting good team, not a "living in the past like the Cowfux" one

Only if we get lucky and get an all-world rookie. This is too big of a gamble to take. Paeyton's offense is one that is very complex, so any rookie would likely not start. If he did, then he would have a toned down offense. It would be best to have a guy on the team for 1-2 yrs that has learned the system, knows it well and can step in and run it without compromising any of it.

Current depth chart:
Drew Brees, signed through 2016
Luke McCown, signed through 2014
Ryan Griffin, signed through 2015
Draft possibilities: This shouldn't be a high priority for the Saints in the draft. Brees should have at least three or four great years left in him -- if not more -- so it's too early for the Saints to invest heavily in a future replacement plan.
And the Saints like second-year pro Griffin, who will battle for the backup job this year and could potentially follow a career path like former Saints backup Chase Daniel. However, Sean Payton said recently the Saints are always on the lookout for talent at quarterback since it's the most important position on the roster. So if they see great value in a mid-round or late-round pick, it wouldn't be surprising to see them grab a young QB to battle Griffin for that role.

I get it and I agree. The Saints have definitely upgraded in free agency. Who's to say drafting a QB wouldn't count?

is a mid tier qb really an upgrade to Luke or even rgiv?
