@WillBrinson: Mr. @WojYahooNBA reports some “believe Silver has been studying the nuclear option on Sterling” LINK

quote:

Several league officials – including owners and Board of Governors members – told Yahoo Sports they believe Silver has been studying the nuclear option on Sterling: a provision in the NBA's bylaws that would allow Silver to summon a vote of league owners to strip Sterling of his ownership. The NBA would run the Clippers until the team could be sold.

Minimally, Silver could implement these penalties on Sterling: a one-year suspension, a $1 million fine and an assignment to counseling. For all the years former commissioner David Stern let Sterling slide, there's a strong belief Stern simply feared Sterling in the courts. Sterling is an attorney – he loves litigation – and Stern feared Sterling would become Al Davis to his Pete Rozelle.

For now, Sterling's estranged wife Shelly believes she can find a way to control the Clippers, but the NBA has no intentions of the team staying in the family's hands. That'll never be a compromise, because Silver and the owners understand the public tenor: The Sterling family must go.

sterling will almost assuredly beat the NBA in court, which will be a shite show (and keep this story alive for years)

silver needs to just issue a big fine and a year suspension and then try to change the constitution

When Sterling became reluctant to honor Rivers' sign-and-trade agreement for J.J. Redick, there was a belief race played a factor. As one league source said, "He thought it was too much to pay for a white player."

Yes, Sterling didn't want to so easily part with Eric Bledsoe, despite Rivers telling him they could never afford to pay Bledsoe in restricted free agency next summer. That was part of it, yes, but those who knew Sterling – who had history with him – believed largely that his disdain for paying $7 million per year for a white player caused him pause.

Also thought this was interesting

What they should do is bring this nuclear option up, let an appeals panel shoot it down, and then fine and suspend Sterling so the story will go away.

I would be leery of agreeing to Silver's proposal. Haiman created the gallows meant for Mordecai and ended up hung on his own creation.

What if Silver gets tired of Mark Cuban's complaining about the refs? Would Silver try to strip him of the Mavericks?

So you can be stripped of your property because of your opinion?

Will the NBA have the Clippers trade back for Eric Gordon? If so, I'm all in for this

I Mean.. Sterling would win in court right? Because the only evidence they have was him being illegally recorded and the tapes would be thrown out. Therefore no case..

Right?

Of course he is. It's in the league's best interest to look like they are giving 110% to this issue.

quote:

They say that now, but in the end this is exactly what will happen. Sterling doesn't seem like the type that will go quietly into the night, and Billionaires don't like all of their personal and financial details becoming public record, which is exactly what would happen if the league went Nuclear and Sterling went Al Davis. The fight will not be worth it to them, but letting the public think they're gearing up for war until something else becomes the news of the day is worth all the effort.
