what are the eligibility rules when a child transfers from private to public school when it comes to being eligible for football in august?

I thought you had to wait a year if it was public to private? I mean...do you penalize an athlete because his mother/father can't afford to send him to private any longer? seems unfair.

Do you live in the district for the public school? If it was a magnet scenario and you didn't live in district than a year. If you move or live in district your kid should be eligible to play.
I promise you the head coach should know.

it's my first cousin back from where I work. he lives in a town that has both a public and a private. he's considering sending his child to the public school but doesn't want him to have to sit out a year.
there will be no "moving" involved. simply moving schools.

it's not financial but, I told him that he could use it as an excuse.

The rules are very simple.
The only way your child would be immediately eligible is if he physically changed his address.
You would have to move out of parish and attend a school in the new parish/school zone.
Unless the school he is transferring to is his established home school, he will have to sit out a year.
He is just going to have to wait. People have sent in much better reasons then "can't afford it" and been shot down flat.

If you are in that school zoning then you're eligible right away

he lives inside of the school district for this particular public school. does this mean that he can play this year?

To get away from the politics of private school athletics.... or maybe, tired of listening to the private school parents complain how Little Johnny was an "all-star " all his life and now has to sit the bench behind "that kid"

Yup

It has to be the first school he went to as a freshman or the private school has to be outside his school district/parish.
Another question. Is the private school a LHSAA member?

One year if the public school is not his home school or if it's in the same district as his old school.

Not if it's in the same district as his old school.

Well unless that private school is outside the parish/district he stays in, he will have to sit out a year.
However, as a man who has coached at both private and public schools, I can assure you there is not a lot of difference.
a-hole parents are everywhere. "Politics" too. Most parents have their child's best interest in mind. It's up to the coach to put the teams best interest first.
I would not rush to jump ship because of this. A lot of things to take into consideration.
