I have not, that is why I want to talk with the booking guy. Bird numbers were down all over SD the last two years due to drought and cutting of CRP. Places with habitat will be the first to rebound, and weather has been better the past year. He has good reviews and been a long time poster on the Ultimate Pheasant forum. He has 11 camps, this is just one of them (many are already booked), all owned by the farmers who live and will show us around the property. There is also a link showing what each camp killed by week Kills last year This place did ok, but not great. I have hunted wild birds before, they are not easy to kill and get smart very quick. It was a tier 4 camp and moved up to a tier 3 so I want to know why and what improvements were done. The county is traditionally kills very good numbers of birds...

My family and I drove into Aberdeen last night at around 8pm. We saw a lot of pheasants along the way on Hwy 12 eastbound into Aberdeen. I finally started counting from Mina to Aberdeen. From Mina to where the road splits to 4 lane (around 7 miles) and we counted 29 roosters and tons of hens. Hopefully that equates to good hunting this fall!

I dont expect to kill limits daily for everyone, but id like to get on some burds for my old man.
I dont have to shoot but this pretty much last of his bucket list items since we did the elk last year

I think we have a good shot at decent numbers, but those birds are tough and hard to drop and lots of time run when they hit the ground. They don't die easy...

My labs hates a wounded bird. Sounds it will be a good time.

Wick, got another buddy who is in. The duck pics sealed the deal. Down to one spot left?

I've had 2 other people aside from Wick that said if you can cook you get the red carpet treatment up there. Couple cases of jar roux and some frozen precut trinity we're in!!

Yeah, I was hitting the sauce pretty hard last night. I think I invited a stranger. Disregard my "buddy" who was "in".

This is a good trip. We use pheasant City Lodge in Wessington Springs, SD.
As a poster mentioned before.... We are undoubtedly their favorite guests, cooking seafood gumbo, pheasant/andouille jambalaya, squirrel gravy, rabbit sauce picant....
Btw, folks up there dont hunt squirrels or rabbits.... And there are tons of them. Season should be open when you go.... So ask them about hunting them during hours that u cant hunt duck or pheas.
Enjoy!

What can I say? I got excited.
Don't let me invite anyone else...and if I do, y'all come check on me at the lodge if you hear someone say "it places the lotion into the basket."

Just had a long talk (almost and hour) with the guy that handles the booking and liked the conversation that I had. I am going to put down a 25% deposit tonight to hold our spot. He said if he have people that are not drawn for waterfowl, we can hunt North Dakota, which has plenty of public spots less than an hour from the lodge. If we want we can come in a day or two early and hunt waterfowl also for an additional $50 per day per person.

Sounds like a plan! Thanks for putting all this together, Wick. I'd like to offer to clean your first pheasant when we get there. No, no. Not up for debate.

Sounds good. We gonna need a few trucks and a trailer.

Yes we are...
I was told you can never have enough dogs. I have a 2 hole box that will hold 4 dogs (depending on size) but takes up almost the entire bed of a truck.

My dad and I have a four door diesal. We can haul all our gear and my two labs in it. I can get a box trailer if I need to, but gas mileage goes to shite.
We just need gear and food correct?
Also, my old man is talking to a friend who may fill one of the other spots

How does it work coming in early to hunt waterfowl? We stay in the same lodge?
The 920 covers the lodge and hunting rights?

Yes, as it gets closer we can make sure we are bring the right amount and not too much gear and get a rough idea on food. Capt will probably be in charge of food and we will want to plan to be able to feed the farmer. Good way to make friends...
