Pardon the confusion, ma'am. Should have known. None of these dummies would recommend bringing a book.
That's more what I expect. Bunch of drunks that need beer to enjoy an evening.

I took my then 5 and 3 yr old girls last year. Camped out on a sandbar on the river. Here's what I figured out.
My girls will survive an EMP attack. They can entertain themselves with sticks and sand.
Bring plenty of bug repellant (thermacells and plenty refills)
Leave the caffeine at home. They'll drink water.
Teach them how to play battle (cards). The big one should be old enough.
Bring more pillows and blankets than you think you need. They'll get stuff spilled on them and mud tracked on them.
Bring something to start a fire quickly. Kids are impatient and at that age teaching about fire building is difficult. It's better to just spray an accelerant and have fire quickly.
Bring medicine for allergies. They'll get into something that can be fixed with Benadryl.
Don't, I repeat DO NOT, bring a puppy and the children. That was a mistake I'll never make again.
Wake them up early the morning of campout to make sure they get tired early. You don't want them calling for mom at 10:00 pm.
Don't expect to catch or kill anything to eat, or get anything whatsoever productive done. Plan on just keeping them happy and safe. Save serious trips for when they are bigger.

We've camped with ours since they were less than a year old. We started at Tickfaw a State Park. Air mattresses, very few toys, flashlights/glowsticks, favorite book, their pillows, and a nightlight. Peanut butter and jelly for dinner. Their favorite cereal for breakfast. It really wasn't that difficult. They were so occupied w nature that they were exhausted and sleeping by sundown.
For a 3 and 5, make sure to bring their bikes.
Tickfaw is very easy and only 45 minutes from BR. They have a nice playground and a small water splash park. All of the trails are on boardwalks, and most of them are short loops. They also have a great nature center with kid friendly activities. We never need many toys. They stay occupied the whole time.
Best $15 per night we've spent!

Great advice, we are going to Fountainbleu State park. Should be fun. I was thinking of bringing our beagle puppy but I think that may be a pain in the neck.

Good choice of park. We've brought the dog in the past, but if you're going to be the only adult, I'd advise against it. No pets are allowed in the buildings, so bathroom breaks, showers, and teeth brushing would be a huge ordeal.
Also, we always get the improved sites. That will give you water AND electricity. We always hang a string of white Christmas lights on a clothesline for camp lighting. Nb4whitetrash

This. I also suggest bringing a bundle of firewood in case every other camper has found all the good firewood.

And some hydrocortisone for immediate soothing of the bug bites.

99% of the time, the state park will have $5 bundles of firewood at the ranger station.

Took my son to Lake Chicot when he was 5. Brought our bikes with us. If you've ever been, you know about the hills at Chicot. Ended up at the hospital in Ville Platte getting 3 staples in his head from wrecking the shite out of his bike on one of the hills. Other than that, great trip. We go to Lake Fausse Point a couple times a year. They have great hiking trails.
Pretty much make sure you have plenty of water/food and bug repellent. The bugs can ruin the trip, especially for kids. And definitely need an air mattress.

Yep, we skip the bikes at Chicot unless we're camping in the North campground. There's always at least one kid getting injured on those hills and curves in the South CG.

Did that trip with bikes. Had a blast and came very close to killing myself on said bike very drunk.

Hot dogs
beer
marsh mallows
Cheetohs
Mountain Dew
I brought my 3 year old camping years ago and this is all we brought. He puked all in the bottom of our tent and all I had was a little light on my head to try and clean it up at 2AM. I just scooped it up with my shirt and threw it in the fire. Ahhhh the memories.

We have taken our kids camping for years. One thing that we always take is Jiffy Pop popcorn. It is great over a fire and they always like popcorn.
Great times and memories.

Chicot Park is just north of the Chicot ridge which demarcates S. La. from N. La. Anything North of the ridge has some kind of hills. Damn near everything South of it is flat.
An interesting aside....there's an instant change in dialect when you cross the bridge on Chicot Park Rd.....twang to the North, flat to the South

Might be easier to bring the 5 yr alone first and then both the next time. Probably be a lot harder with both going for the first time.
