Just don't be the first person off the boat. You are responsible for all the lives on the boat. it's not that difficult a concept.

I'm sure there's a point (with the size of modern ships) that a Captain's orders are pointless. What good are a Captain's orders when the vessel is more than 50% sunk? Either way, once you are actually in the water, you might was well try to survive, otherwise it's practically suicide.

So much selfishness these days. No one really cares about others but they'll pretend like they do. True responsibility doesn't exist. Let a computer do it. Shame. If you sign on to be a ship captain, you agree to do everything in your power to save the vessel and the passengers. Ask a retired ship captain what they think of those that bail first. It's not pretty. To them it was an honor to be in that position. Not just a pay check. You were grateful to the shipping company. They weren't evil money grubbers. So much has changed.

When Sully put that plane in the Hudson he was the last one off. He personally walked the plane and checked for passengers before he got off.

I think the idea is that the captain should be the last one off the boat because he should be directing evacuation. If everyone else is off the boat I don't think anybody expects him to stay and die by himself for no reason

Before you finish sucking him off, you do realize it wasn't rapidly sinking, right?

I would think much better than from an underwater control room!
Don't you think he would be invaluable giving helpful information to rescue crews?.....where to enter, where to look, how to get there, etc.
It's highly possible more lives were saved because he was not underwater

Apparently the South Koreans don't agree with you, because the captain has been arrested.

Actually, the responsibility of the captain is the safety and wellbeing of all his crew and passengers (if any). That being said, he would then be the last one off the boat. Not necessary that he drown but in the exercise of his first responsibility he takes that risk.

Not for leaving the boat, he made several mistakes earlier. Including letting the 3rd mate have the wheel!
The arrest is simply a witch hunt to save face by the country. I'll bet a dollar to a donut there were several overlooked safety issues and or inspections ignored by the government. It will come out

Well which is it? Did he make several mistakes that lead to his boat sinking and a sever loss of human life or is it a witch hunt?

Maybe witch hunt was a poor choice of words. Scape goat might fit better. I'm sure if a 3rd mate was driving its frowned upon. But I bet the guy has driven parts if trips several times. So I have little doubt they will find anything they can against the captain.
I also have no doubt there were issues with the boat and it's regulation. Some things will be found to be overlooked/ignored.
That big boy had something wrong with it to roll like that.....a design flaw, overloaded, etc.

They are normally the last off the ship but are never expected to go down with it.

Good point, you run the risk of insulting feminist bitches by insisting they leave first.

I will never go down with my ship

Or at least be the last one off the boat. Damn sure don't tell folks to wait for the rescue ship and then jump ship.

The captain of a ship is responsible for the safety of all passengers. Once they get on the ground, they are on their own. Same for an airline pilot. if anyone survives the crash (the pilot usually dies first when people die) they are on their own - the responsibility of the stewardess stewards to get off the plane.
The captain sort of owns his ship.
