Ive exchanged a few emails with this guy about his boat, says he has bill of sale but no papers on boat and that he was having trouble getting it registered. Apparently he got it from a guy that got it from a guy that got it from a guy...it exchanged hands about 3 times without anyone transferring registration. Was told he had to get BOS from last registered owner which he cant find. Are there any ways around this? I think its a deal on the boat, but I dont want something I cant use legally. Link to the boat below

I wouldn't touch it.
I am skeptical already when it comes to buying a boat that old. It's real easy to buy one cheap and end up putting 10 times as much into the thing on repairs trying to fix it up.

Wouldn't touch it until the guy can show you proof of registration.

If the boat hasn't been stolen, the current owner or whom ever the last owner was that had a "good" hard copy registration needs to renew it through WLF then the transfer process can be made legal. If and when you are stopped on the water by enforcement, you will be subject to fines without a proper registration. If they run the Hull-ID and find it has been stolen, they will seize it. Without proper papers I would certainly stay away!
The trailer is another matter but should also have a current registration through the dmv.
You can have all the "bills of sale" you want and they do you no good with out the registration being in your name. Bills of sale should also be notorized.

the HID is clean. He sent me a pic of it on the transom. I called WLF to check. Unfortunately wlf wont give me names of last registered owners. They are kinda difficult to talk to

Still there cannot be a legal transfer of the boat with out the registration. If you purchace it, you will be stuck in the same situation if you ever want to sell it again. Plus when you are stopped on the water, you will be subject to a ticket. I worked for WLF and have seen this quite a few times.
I would def stay away.

I would pass, all the issues with paper work and a 1985 outboatd. Save up and get one newer than 2000 model for under 10K, they are out there, just harder to find.

You will endure more than $500 of mental anguish fittle fricking around with it not having a title or registration, IMO.

I would not frick with that. It has a rotten floor to start with and a 1985 carbed 175. When you get it running you may have a range of 40 miles.

40 miles is it?? I think it has a 30 gal tank or close to it.

He should be paying someone $500 to take it off of his hands.
I went through this same situation with a pirogue that didnt have any paperwork on it. After tons of research, I ended up giving it away to a guy with private land.
If that guy absolutely cannot get ahold of the previous owner or "does not know" the previous owner, you cannot do anything. No filing for lost title, no new or original BOS, etc.

I saw a 99' champion on the sportsman for around that price. Looked like it was in better shape

Stay away bad year for the Skeeter because of the wood stringers used in 1991 in their hulls. If you are going to use in a local private lake then okay pay $500 bucks for it otherwise run don't walk away from that boat.
