Under current law, this petition could go on for a decade or more. You can't have that looming over the region like that. There should be a deadline and holding elections costs a lot of tax payer money. That's why they are pushing to have it on the same day as other elections.
Pretty cut and dry.

I understand that. FWIW, I agree to a point. But it's pretty coincidental that this was pushed forth in response to the SG effort. IMO, if you are going to do that, then the time table for any existing petition drives should start the day that legislation is introduced.
Has this been passed through completely yet?

No, it just passed through committee. Still has full senate vote and full house vote.

First, I think a year is long enough, and I'd have no problem with supporting a law that said that. However, I have a problem with changing the rules in midstream and I would grandfather all those who started petition drives prior to the law going into effect.
Second, I too think there are too many elections, and it makes sense to economize and cut out all the issue type elections like this one.
However, we just had a BREC election, and the people in charge saw no problem with having that one when no one noticed. The same thing applies to school elections here in EBR and Library elections.
The powers that be "sneak" these elections in so that only the hard core vote.
I would like all such elections be curtailed and the ones we have are the ones where we see members of Congress being voted on, the governor, the mayor, etc. and not just a tax issue or an issue like this.

While they aren't necessarily "blocking" a vote, make no mistake BR is terrified that St. George may come to furition. Otherwise, there would be no reason to push all of these bills through the legislature.
Truth.

You know Money, the devil is always in the details.
The opposition sounds reasonable, right? They just want to cap the petition period at a year and save money by taking advantage of the November election day, right?
We if you go to the secretary of state's website, you can see there is a Nov. 4th election already scheduled with a December 6th. runoff election already scheduled.
So why did Dorsey pick Nov, 4th as the drop dead election and not Dec. 6th.?
I'm guessing this is why:
July 23 is the last day for getting a proposition on the Nov. 4th ballot.
So do the math; The Advocate reported the SG drive began on 9/23/13 and the cutoff day if Dorsey's amendment passes, etc. is 7/23/14 then the SG people would only have 10 months to start their drive, certify the signatures, and then get the proposition on the ball.
That's part of the truth too.

If I had to guess, I'd say having an isolated BREC election didn't help BREC at all. Seems like the type of people who would make the special effort to go out and vote in an election like are more likely the voters that are fed up with taxation.

Usually when there's a school election, a BREC election, or a Library election it's held at a time when there is little or nothing on the ballot.
They do this because the people running those organizations know the turnout will be very low, and that their people and their relatives will go out and vote and most regular folks won't even know there is an election going on.
I think it has been proven time after time in EBR Parish that if you want a new tax or a tax renewed; the time to do it is when nothing is going on.
You do realize these people in power pick their election days. If BREC thought it was a bad day for them, they would not have chosen the day they did.

I understand. I may be way off, but it just seems like the anti-tax types are generally better at following tax renewals and getting out and voting against them. I'd be curious to see a parish wide poll regarding renewal of the BREC tax. I'm surprised it only passed 60-40. I suspect a larger percentage than that actually approve of it. I don't know anyone personally was active campaigning against it.

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier. These areas that have never been associated with the very small St. George "community" are not all on board with the uncertainty that this petition has created.

Costco, Celtic and SAIF Credit Union want to join the city of Baton Rouge.
The three businesses are located just south of the city limits in the area that is being proposed for the new city of St. George.
The Metro Council is set to approve the annexation at the April 23 meeting.
All three property owners petitioned for annexation, and both city police and fire departments, who will now protect those areas, confirmed the annexation would not increase operational or capital costs, according to city-parish documents.
Only properties adjacent to the city line can be annexed.
quote:
Patrick Mulhearn, head of Celtic Studios, has said that Celtic has mulled annexation for months — even before the St. George initiative — because its property is divided by the city line.
“It just makes sense to be a part of the city. We tout ourselves as being in the heart of Baton Rouge,” Mulhearn said in December. “As far as taxes, it’s tough to say what will happen if you’re in St. George. We’d rather deal with the known than the unknown.”

Thanks for posting this.
These three businesses are just the first of many who will be asking to annexed into BR, just as I predicted last year when the petition was started.

I have no problem with that.
It is their choice.

Exactly. Let the citizens/businesses make their own determinations without government interference.

By the way Costco just got a huge tax break from Kip Holden and the parish. Its no surprise to see them side with Kip, and co.

So Costco is part of the "powerful forces" lining up to stop St George???
