or just travel to other countries and experience their less shady "culture"?

I don't know what is worse, the posters acting like if you step foot out of the resort you will be murdered and raped, or the posters acting like it is completely safe and you should have no worries going out on your own?

america is more dangerous than many countries you may deem "shady".

i did not feel comfortable in the Dominican Republic when we traveled off the resort.

I felt perfectly safe at all times in Jamaica. I get what you are saying though. It is good to keep a heightened sense of awareness when you are not familiar with your surroundigs, but this should go for all times and not just when traveling abroad.

I've been to Jamaica 7 times, last time was in February and I was there for 17 days. I've been to enough places off the beaten path to say yes, in general yes it's safe. And the people I go with have been there 25+ times and they'd all agree with me.You just need to use some common sense, as you would when you travel anywhere. I don't begrudge anyone that's staying at an AI spending their entire trip inside the fence on the compound but the fear mongering is overblown.

That's the answer...No where is safe. Everyone is at risk of getting robbed or shot or raped ANYWHERE in the world. New Orleans, Denver, Bozeman Montana, Salina Kansas, Jamaica, Brazil, etc....Crime knows no bounds.

However, if you are aware of your surroundings, know when you feel comfortable or not, and take precautions to be safe, you tend to avoid trouble.
