I believe cougars exist in Louisiana but not so much in the marshs/swamps of Lafourche Parish
ETA: Just doesn't seems to big-cat-y

Cougars are rare here, but they do exist in Louisiana, and yes it is possible that there is a melanistic cougar out there somewhere, but having not seen one in person nor on trail cam, I have no proof.
FYI. There is a very large population of melansitic squirrels in morgan city especially around lake end park, that wasn't there before the 1980's. I bring this up because, if there is a melansistic cougar out there, seems that there would be a population increase over the next decade or so.

I think there are 2 potential big cats that travel through Louisiana. The black jaguar & the Florida cougar/puma. One being black & turning chocolate brown with age & the other tan.
I've seen one big cat jump off some oak tops piled up on Kisatchie National Forest. Leaped of the back side & gone.
Another time easing around gravels out around saline lake saw big cat cross the road bout 150 yards out. Got on across the road with few steps it seemed.
Both times seemed to be a hell of a lot bigger than a house cat. Wish I could have got a scope on either. Happened to fast. Don't know if I would shoot.
