I should be going to jump within a year. I'll bump this thread then. Then again in 3 or 4 years when I get 20 jumps.

Just remember to keep your feet and knees together and your chin on your chest. As long as you do this you'll probably walk away from every jump...or at least that's what they tell me.

Yay. I'm too old for jump and really have no desire to go but I'm joining a ANG TACP unit so I have to. I think air assault would be more applicable but whatever. If they want me to jump out of airplanes I'll jump out of airplanes.

I haven't, but my Dad was 173rd Airborne in Vietnam. Made jumps into combat. Passed away 3 years ago. Still proud of him.
Sorry to hear about your dad. My dad was in the 173rd in Vietnam too. I was born at Eglin Florida Ranger Camp after he got back from Vietnam when he was an instructor at the Ranger camp. Jumpmaster, etc. He retired a Colonel with something over 700 jumps. He's one tough SOB.

I have dropped you guys out of my plane over 20 times. Does that count?

I am currently reading the old book "A Bridge Too Far" by Cornelius Ryan. A great book for anybody in the Airborne fraternity.
The British First Airborne Division's drop zones for the second lift were exceedingly hot.
The pilots of the C47s over the drop zones displayed unparalleled courage and determination over those "hot" drop zones under fierce enemy anti-aircraft fire.
It was a common sight to see a C47 on fire and going down being held strictly on course by the pilot so that the Paratroopers had the chance to jump out of the crashing aircraft.
Several Paratroopers reported jumping from flaming aircraft, only to watch the C47 that they just exited crashing to the ground, while the Paratrooper himself was still in mid-air descent.
So, the pilots during the Market-Garden operation were very courageous -- suicidally courageous.
OF course, something had gone wrong with the plan, because no Drop Zone is supposed to be under enemy fire at the time of the drop.

Good luck. I think you'll enjoy being in the Airborne fraternity. Being on jump status in an Airborne unit will be something you'll always be very proud of. You'll never forget your experience.
So, that makes about 3 people, besides me, who have 20 or more jumps in an Airborne unit.

I'm former Army, not Airborne but I know Airborne people. Airborne types are not typically internet types for the most part, so this will be a low yield topic.

Great book that was made in to a really good movie. Unbelievable cast:
quote:
Dirk Bogarde
James Caan
Michael Caine
Sean Connery
Edward Fox
Anthony Hopkins
Gene Hackman
Hardy Krüger
Laurence Olivier
Robert Redford
Maximilian Schell
The Longest Day was a great book too. Ryan's style is money.

You forget what half the Airborne qualified troops look like. There's plenty of fat Airborne cooks and clerks. Not to take away from actual Airborne units. Most of the BSer types got it as an enlistment or re-enlistment option.

My pop was 11th Airborne (Pacific Theater in WWII). Glider pilot too. 1st Lt. at age 18. Been dead since 1989, he apologized on his deathbed to me about never teaching me to hunt, said the Army made him hunt people and ruint him on the trade. Miss him erry day.
Thanks to you all for you service.

I've been there. My last gunnery exercise (Tank Table VIII) before I got out back in the 90's was on the tank range they had set up out there in the middle of Eglin's missile range. We were not far from the Ranger Camp. Did they have the giant alligator when you were there? One day when we had some downtime we went over to the Ranger camp to check him out. That was one big assed gator.

I never saw a fat Airborne cook or clerk on jump status and actively jumping.
Tell me about your experience meeting "plenty of fat Airborne cooks and clerks ". I'd like to know more about this.

Army airborne school has hands down been the worst training school I've ever been to. It was pathetic

I've heard it's ghey because you could realistically get the training done in about a week but the Army feels the need to make a rite of passage or something so they drag it out and make you run all over the place and do other dumb shite.
