No dog that ever lived at this house lived past the day it bit somebody who didn't deserve it.

Agreed. Depends on what happened. If it is an aggressive dog that seeks out and attacks children, obviously it has to go.

If it bites an excited boy out of startled reaction because it doesn't play w/ kids often, I don't blame the dog, I blame the owner, the kid, and the kid's parents (if anyone).

Clearly if the dog tried to truly tear up the kid that's a different matter, but it doesn't sound like that in this case.
