Went there last year. Rode some elephants in Jaipur.
What do you want to know?

I have for 4 days--2 in Mumbai and 2 in Banaglore. Saw no elephants.
Remember the scene in Indiana Jones portraying the 1940s where everyone was jumping on train? Pretty much the same. There is also a prevailing smell that is very distinct and never goes away. We were advised to only eat what we were served.
I'd like to explore on my own.

My personal experience and feelings towards India match my personal experience and feelings towards brothels.
Spooky. Never been and no real interest in visiting.
With that said, I see myself in a brothel much easier than I see myself in India, which is somewhat similar to a brothel except much more crowded and stinky.

I want to go, but then I think of this......
and realize no way I could handle the smell.

A few years ago I was in singapore...which is clean, perfect, and in all ways not india. Then the wife got the idea we shoukd catch a cab to little India.
Let me tell you...instant change. Cleanest city in the world became over crowded, pigeons everywhere, smelled like the stockyard but there were no animals. Women with manly faces. Too many people. This was India.
That said, I know some Indian expats who are absolutely delightful people...and the women are none to shabby either.

I've been to Bombay and Madras. I didn't care for India. Nothing could prepare for me for the level of poverty there and the fact that they purposefully maim children to turn them into beggars.

stay off their horses, mostly retired race horses very unstable. Have some shirts made, bring back lots of sandalwood, smells nice

Fly into Delhi, spend a couple of days there. Take a day trip to Jaipur (historic walled city with palaces) and another to Agra to see the Taj Mahal... it's incredible. The sights along the way to each of these are worth the drive.
Then fly down to Kerala, and take an overnight trip to Munnar... incredible tea farming in the mountains... breathtaking views. Also hit the backwater tours in Kerala. Kerala is totally different than northern India. It's tropical.
We also drove down to Kanyakumari (southernmost tip) for an overnight trip. This, and again all of the places in between, was a great experience.
There's so much more to see in India... this is just what I did and I enjoyed it. Can't wait to go back some day.

Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Mysore. On the drive from Bangalore to Mysore nearly killed a little kid who ran onto the highway in front of us - scariest driving experience ever.
I would recommend somewhere else, I have been there several times and except for business would not go back...

Spent a few months there. Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal), Kolkata, Darjeeling and Puri (beach town south of Kolkata). I was basically only up north so no experience with more tropical Southern cities.
If you have questions about any of those places I can answer
