Yeah I was going to make mention of that too(about Galette).
You really have to take Galette and Johnson out of the LB group because(unless Johnson has been practicing as a standup LB, which I didn't see really in preseason) they play a DE role, standing or not.
Butler, Haralson, Dawson, and Knox are our "OLBs", which in the system we ran last year was considered a part time role(less than 50% of the snaps for the position). Though with Butler back and Haralson(and Dawson) getting more and more playing time toward the end that could increase(or cut into Hawthorne's playing time).

I feel like he's great for the locker room regardless of his on field play (if hes hurt). There were certain games last year where it was evident he was the only one that knew how to play 3-4 olb. You have to think that was a big reason why we played alot of hybrid lines.
Hopefully Victor Butler will change all that but unfortunately I don't hold out the great hope that most of the people on this board do when it comes to him. I just hope he can contribute coming off the acl.

Triplett's take-
As for Haralson, his fit is pretty obvious. Even though the Saints have outside linebacker Victor Butler coming back from a torn ACL this year, the two can split time in a rotation. Butler is more of a pass-rush specialist, while Haralson is more of a run-defense specialist.
Haralson played 37 percent of the Saints’ defensive snaps last season, racking up 30 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He could be used in a similar role this year, especially if the Saints line up in more true 3-4 formations than they did last year.

I definitely noticed him most on running plays. He seemed to always stay at home when he needed to and catch guys trying to cutback with a textbook wrap-up

Good.
Haralson is quality.

I definitely agree that run defense is his specialty, but I also believe his is our best coverage linebacker.
The thing is I'm not sure if that is more praise on him or more a knock on how bad everyone else is at it.

Butler might be better.
But I guess we'll see

Possible, but word on him was he was best as a pass rusher, decent as a run defender, and weak in coverage.
But weak in coverage for another team could be best on ours.

I was doing so yahooing and came across some PFF stuff from 2011:

It's crazy how both Hawthorne and Herring were billed as coverage LBs when they were first signed. I'm going to guess there scores from their time with us wouldn't be much different(except worse overall for Hawthorne).

Not sure how anyone thinks Haralson is a coverage guy

Difference between being a coverage guy and being the best coverage guy at a position that is extremely weak at it.
I'm not saying he's a coverage LB. I'm just saying he was solid, which for us is the best we have. I'd put Humber close to that, but Lofton and Hawthorne are inconsistent at best and just bad at times.
I do keep forgetting Dawson though. He looked solid as well.

Not hard to reach that conclusion when we have two absolutely horrendous pass coverage LBs in the middle

No one thinks he's the Kennan Lewis of LBs, but him and Dawson both graded out light years ahead of the rest of the LBs in pass coverage

You know, if you click on pass cov. up there, it'll rank each player by their score in that category.

They should totally start playing haralson in pass coverage for 410 more snaps now.
Posted on 4/1/14 at 10:07 pm to mm2316
According to that, haralson didn't have many plays in pass coverage. I'm glad he's back but we clearly need more depth there in my opinion.
