Nice gif. Check out the "palms up, helpless" gesture of #24 when Pete goes by him...BWAHAHA!!!

I saw him play in an exhibition game in Jacksonville Florida when he was with the Celtics. Ball handling was unbelievable.

Its not the NCAA that decides howlong a player has to stay. That decision is made by the ccorresponding professional league

That appears to be Rick Barry. Another great shooter.

NCAA can't make anyone remain in college.

he was a wizard, he was immaculate
big part of the reason to Love LSU
LSU basketball gets short shrift (whatever that is)on here often and people express a lack of history and passion for it, but I think LSU has had some great, colorful college basketball players come through
and I have a lot of admiration for former LSU players like Big Baby, Brandon Bass, the former Chris Jackson, people on here criticized Brandon Bass and Big Baby both for heading to the NBA when they did, both did not get drafted in the 1st round and making a team was suspect for both and they proved many totally wrong having successful careers in the NBA. And some overcame major hardships; someone reported Big Baby's mother coming out on the court during an LSU game drugged out (some still criticize him for not playing football); Chris Jackson doesn't know who his father is (and neither does his mother)...just think about that for a second. That's no excuse to trash your own country, but if there is one guy I can forgive for being disillusioned and misguided, it is him.
real interesting story about him was when he was about to break the record for best free throw percentage for a single season in the NBA, was it Calvin Murphy (?) the then record holder, who ran out on the court from the stands, grabbed the basketball out of Chris' hands and rubbed the ball and said he was putting gris gris on it and he missed. bizarre

If Pete were alive today, his appearances on campus would be magical. When they return, Shaq, Billy Cannon and others draw standing Os in Tiger Stadium, but Pete Maravich..,good Lord...the roars would be unbeleiveable !
He was just the greatest of all time.

Bob Petit
He gets lost in the pre-TV NBA age.
A two-time NBA MVP and a nice guy (even if you are sitting in his seats at the PMAC).

Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak will be broken before someone averages 43 points a season for 3 seasons like Pete did. Unbreakable!!!
You could let Lebron in his prime play in college and I don't know if he will average 43 a game for an entire season.
He would be damn close to it, but it only takes a game or two where you are scoring only 25 for you needing to have 60+ point games to make up the difference.

Only two colleges were represented with 3 players on the NBA 50 year all time team. LSU and UNC.

Johnny Neumann was a big scorer, but he was no Pete Maravich!!
Following a standout career at Overton High School in Memphis, Neumann took his game to the University of Mississippi, where he played from 1969 to 1971. During his sophomore season, he drew comparisons to Pete Maravich after averaging an NCAA-high 40.1 points per game.[1] His strongest performances included a 63 point game against Louisiana State University and a 60 point game against Baylor University.[2] Neumann earned All-America and SEC Men's Basketball Player of the Year honors at the end of the season.
After his sophomore season at Ole Miss, Neumann became the first player in basketball history to sign a hardship clause[3]

Anyone making that claim about another player should be considered as an idiot. He was a man amongst boys at both the college and pro levels in his life time. It was truly saddening to hear of his sudden death when it occurred.

When Pete was a senior, on the freshman team was a player with the last name Huffman (I think). I remember him averaging over 30 a game on the freshman team. I don't recall him playing varsity ball the following season and did a Google search but came up empty. Any old timers....remember this guy?

No one. I knew him and watched him in person. He was the best period. My daughter lives across the street from his widow, Jackie. The family is exceptional
