So today I notice that my transmission is slipping (automatic) pretty badly. I take note of it, tell myself I'll put new fluid in it tonight, and hopefully that'll solve the problem.

On the way back from lunch, as the Jeep was switching from first to second gear, there was a pretty big RPM spike and the engine cut off in the middle of the road. I manage to pull over, start the car again, and notice that the transmission wasn't catching and that while in Drive my car might as well be in neutral. I experiment and find that the transmission will catch when the Jeep is put into Low, and seeing how my work is a mile away on a service road from where I was parked, I decide to ride Low all the way back. Well, get about halfway there before the engine cuts off again, and I pull over to the side of the road again. I wait for a few minutes, attempt to start the car again, and now the transmission will not catch no matter what gear the car is in.

Anyone got any ideas and more importantly, what kind of damage am I looking at financially? I'm getting it towed tomorrow.

Should've got one with a manual.

the transmission went out. That's what happens when you buy a 90's-early 00's Jeep with an automatic transmission.

Yeah, I was 16 and stupid when I decided I absolutely had to have a Jeep and didn't know how to drive a stick.

But I was looking for something a little more specific than just the transmission went out. I suppose the problem is too generic to get an answer that specific without seeing it though.

They seem to be a lot better. I've been out of the game for a couple of years though, so I don't really have any experience with the newer ones.

I think the popular swap is the Cherokee auto trans, if I'm not mistaken.

Do you think you could swap a trans yourself or would you pay someone.

So the manuals are fine? Been looking for an early 00's.

In an auto tj/lj you want 03-06.

More than likely, the transmission clutches or bands that control the internal functions has failed. When these clutches and bands wear, it can cause the transmission to lose fluid pressure. When this happens it puts a lot more stress on the components and causes them to wear even quicker. Finally, they wear so much that the transmission doesn't have enough fluid pressure to allow the clutches or bands to operate.

So the gear teeth are just really worn down?

They don't have literal gears in them.

ETA: It could just be really really low on fluid. You should have checked it as soon as you noticed it doing something out of the ordinary. Driving it in that condition could/can cause severe damage. It could have been something very inexpensive, that has turn very expensive.

If it's just low, add fluid and hope for the best. If it's full, then the transmission has to come out to be fixed. The labor will cost you about as much as the transmission will.

I know this in no way helps you, OP, but I'm seriously looking at the new Wranglers. If I pull the trigger on one, I'm getting a manual.

Manuals can be tough to find.

OP is in luck as a 99 Jeep is actually worth repairing.

And you still had to ask.

Yep, I've been wanting a 5-speed with a 4.0 97-03 for a while. The ones I've ran across are always way too expensive for the mileage, and the ones that are reasonable are from up North and are all rusted out.

I agree. Jeeps, specifically Wranglers, are the only Chrysler product in the last 30 years to have a great resale value.

Sorry for your troubles OP. I hate to see a Jeep go down. Good luck.

Not to add salt, but in the future go with a stick shift.
