Put into terms the upgrade in Byrd over Jenkins

I've been swamped in work so I just found out about the Byrd signing. To the more enlightened Saints fans, how much of an upgrade do we now have in Byrd? I know it certainly is an upgrade, just trying to find a realistic comparison.

Jenkins is a good looking tranny.
Bryd has the goods.

This stuck out to me and put it in perspective
quote:
Jairus Byrd: 22 career interceptions, 3 Pro Bowls. Donte Whitner + Malcolm Jenkins + T.J. Ward = 21 interceptions, 3 Pro Bowls.

Byrd was not only the best Safety FA this year over names like Clemons, Bethea, and Whitner, but he was one of the best FA OVERALL this year.
Great signing. The upgrade is astronomical.

Jenkins played well at times last season but Byrd is a tremendous upgrade. I think Jenkins' problem was instincts more than anything physically. He just always seemed a split second late to react and that mixed with poor tackling is why he was ineffective at times.

Byrd ranked #8 overall among safeties last season on PFF...Jenkins ranked #65.
Byrd had 4 missed tackles last season. Jenkins had 16.

Byrd is basically a slightly less athletic Earl Thomas, and has incredible football instincts. If the Saints don't play him as deep as Buffalo did, they are doing themselves a disservice.

Jenkins is a totally different type of player. He was more suited fo for the box and run stopping not so much covering the back end. Byrd is a true FREE safety. Roams the back end and kinds does what he wants.

TIER 1: Difference-makers
1) Jairus Byrd, S, Buffalo Bills: A natural playmaker with plus ball skills, Byrd is Earl Thomas' chief rival as the game's top cover safety. Guys this good usually don't make it to free agency.
TIER 2: Impact starters
2) Eugene Monroe, OT, Baltimore Ravens: Of all the offensive linemen available, Monroe offers the best mix of age, talent and demonstrated production in both the running and the passing game.

1. Jairus Byrd (Signed six-year, $54M deal with NO)
2. T.J. Ward (Signed four-year, $23M deal with DEN)
3. Donte Whitner (Signed four-year, $28M deal with CLE)
4. Antoine Bethea (Signed four-year, $26M deal with SF)

Tremendous safety who makes plays all over the field. With so many teams relying on a single-high safety, there aren’t many out there who fit the bill this side of Earl Thomas. Byrd is one. Best fit: Colts. They desperately need a true safety to make the defense go.

Those are just a few opinions.

He has much, much better ball skills than MJ. A true ballhawking, center field type of free safety. Lets Vaccaro play sort of a Polamalu role where he can drop into coverage, be an extra LB or blitz.

Malcolm Jenkins is to Jarius Byrd, as Aaron Brooks is to Drew Brees?
Posted on 3/12/14 at 11:10 am to Jcorye1
Agreed. he was never the fastest or tallest, but he has a knack for the ball
His worst year was 1 INT, 3 FF (2nd year).
last 3 years: avg 4 INT and 2.7FF

Philly overpaid for Jenkins at $5mil
NOLA paid market value for Byrd at $9mil
the total investment reflects their quality even better-
Jenkins $16.25 w/$8.5 guaranteed
Byrd $54mil $28mil guaranteed
Those numbers reflect the difference in their value. Multi-positional athletic smart player with questionable instincts versus certified premier ballhawking centerfielder
