I use a single prong gig and Coleman lantern. Lantern shield has been removed and replaced with a street light shroud, it's a lot larger and casts out more light. Not a fan of led's, but some people swear by them.

I use this but with a pie plate. Always used a floating stringer never my pirogue. Might try that. I also have a few gigs I've made out of mortar hoes, which are longer mad a lot heavier than say a shovel handle. Drive about a six inch nail in a couple inches then grind to a point. No barb but they are heavy enough to gig and hold with one hand.

I also wear an old pair of high top tennis shoes. It's a bit more protection. Shoes are about 30 years old but I guess they still make them. It's a fun thing to do.

does it strap to your leg or something?

No, you hold it the same way one might hold a metal detector with a shoulder strap. I'd post a pic of it but I don't want people trying to copy he's design. It's works great.

Great info guys!!! So, do you typically do this on the beach at the gulf or and inland bay beach? For instance, Grand Isle; south side of the island or north side?

Well, I'm in Texas so i'll be tryin it out around Galveston. I guess what I really meant was, is it possible to do this on the gulf side with the large waves rolling in? Is it normally better in the calmer bays?

I don't go as much as I like anymore but I'll give up a little info. Back side of the island. and the east end of the island by the coast guard station. Also Hit up FeFe Island. (located on the backside of the island near Sand Dollar)Elmer's Island is good as well.

Newer place that has been successful is the new sand bar in the bay located on the Cheniere side just to the right of the bridge.

Not for the beginner but we would hit up Grand Terre back in the day. Just be careful for drop offs.

Also, anywhere you can find shallow water marsh. Like behind the old grave yard in Cheniere. I've gigged many floor mats back there.

Guys in Texas no need to give out the spots. Most people would probably not go behind the Coast Guard station anyway.

That's the only place I've EVER went. I doubt it's much of a secret bro.
