I am preparing to be underwhelmed by this weeks episode. I am thinking Errol is the YK and everyone else is dead which doesn't seem that interesting IMO.
Errol seems like he is borderline retarded, not sure how he is some serial killer mastermind

Yeah, I am actually thinking this episode is going to expose everyone and explain everything and end with a shocker. NP has already said it is not going to lie nor twist like Sixth Sense but he didn't promise not to shock like Seven! I am standing by prediction to end with a twist/reveal that stuns in the last 5 minutes.

What if the twist was Maggie's father was one of turtles illegitimate children.

I think that is one possibility. After Marty making mention of Audrey's meds, and with the artwork in common with the psych ward, I think Audrey may have gotten the idea for sex with a group of men from the girl they rescued from Ledoux, if she was in that ward. The picture in Maggie's room was a copy Audrey made while there IMO.

It's going to very hard to deliver on all that promise.

I think True Detective has reinvented itself again. It has come down to earth by design in order to give a rational explanation of the events that took place.

If it does have a twist what do you guys think is most likely? One of our two primaries split personalities is a Tuttle kid? Is that possible?
Also the twist may deal with the full reveal of what was on the tape. We saw a minute of it and were then told what was on the rest of it. That is a good formula for baiting us.
And both Rust and Hart are inactive in 2012 after being top state detectives for years? Note they say inactive not retired. After Marty's little story about the baby in the microwave you think someone failed some mandatory psych evaluations?

I am looking for face value, what you see is what you get but the twist is not a lie but a reveal. Once they reveal the twist it will make sense IMO. One reveal I expect is that Audrey was in the same psych ward with the girl they rescued from Reggie. It will explain her dolls and the painting, if she learn of the men raping a girl and copied the painting while there. From x01E07 we learned she took meds and is a painter.

outside of the character of rust, when did it ever leave the world of rational explanations?

I agree she is somehow involved in the ending , to what extent idk...
I will say I don't think this episode will disappoint, I think it will be great tv like the last 7 episodes...

I don't see it.
The whole series we've been told that "big people" are involved in the cult.
Governor/Senator Tuttle
Billy Lee Tuttle
Errol Childress
Another Childress?
Maggie's Dad

I think 3 possibilities for the finale:
1 - Mary/Rust kill all the guys who are involved, then cover up what they've done like they did before. Case get's solved
2 - Marty/Rust kill Errol and one or two others who were helping him. But, not the higher ups in the political chain. Case never get's officially solved
3 - Either Rust or Marty dies in a fight with Errol, or Detective Maynard or Thomas die somehow. But whatever detective dies, the case gets busted wide open and we see everyone being arrested at the end. Case get's soled
That's just my thoughts I'm sure i'll update my predictions as the week progresses, but either way. I'm marking this as my favorite show by far!

My guess on this last episode, they'll find out where the scarred guy is, kill him and possibly get some more info that implicates the senator.
At the end of the show, they have a scene where the news is playing on TV saying how the senator is implicated, but we never hear what happens after that since the show will be done.
Even if he is, we'll never know any of the other "players" behind the scenes, the murders will keep happening (like that old lady said "death is not the end"), either Rust or Marty dies in the process and one of them (the one that survives) has a closing monologue about the case, or something about philosophy as they have alluded to in the show. (which makes me think that if one of them dies, it's Marty. Plus that last scene with Maggie with her asking him about saying goodbye, kind of gives it away, too.)
ETA: oh and we never find out when that dinner was, either.
